I very much enjoyed your timelapse video, MM. That must have been a lot of work! Looks like a beautiful place to live and shoot birds.

You are right of course that no matter where you go you will need to find the birds and it's probably as hard in Florida and Costa Rica as it is over here, although sometimes with people posting images of so many great birds, like Bald Eagles and Osprey, Hawks in the backyard even, it often seems as if these birds are everywhere in your part of the world and all you have to do is step outside with a camera. But I'm fairly certain that is not the case.

The problem here is quality of light. The Netherlands is not blessed with good light. All too many days end before they have properly begun, just greyness and dark and awful. The kind of light that will make ISO800 noisy, even with a 1DIV. In Spring or Summer when the weather is warm and nice, light at sunrise is amazing (sunset too but I really love that morning light). It would be so wonderful to have that more often. That's why I said Florida, but any warm, sunny region would do.

I would love to travel but I have health issues so it's not going to happen. I get sad sometimes when I see pics of Cranes or Spoonbills or Puffins, knowing I'll never shoot them myself. I dream of going to Africa but it will never happen. Still, on good days and when the weather is good, I can go to the countryside, which is just a 10 minute drive away (we're a tiny country so everything is nearby) and that already is great. Even if I don't shoot anything worthwhile, it's just wonderful to be there, out of the city, green fields as far as the eye can see with cattle, little to no traffic and birds. I'm always happy there. And if I manage to shoot something other than my usual city suspects, I'm even happier. :)

Here's just a snap of a Grey Heron. ISO1600 and not a trace of noise on the bird. There was a mild bit in the background, which I cleaned up, but nothing on the bird, not even at pixel level. See, that's the kind of light I like! :-P

Thanks Levina :)
It was a lot of fun, that was part 1 or 3, have no idea where the other parts got off too :(
Yes we are blessed in having traveled a bit and hope to see a few more bits of the world but as we
all know (but cannot say) the world is changing quickly :(
I'm Robert by the way :)

Not stupid at all - especially if you Google vapor cone, as there are a couple of theories on why/how it's formed. Essentially, it occurs when moist air meets a low pressure area, created by the air moving around the aircraft at high sub-sonic speeds. It also occurs at lower speeds, such as high G-force turns, which cause the same effect over wings and tail. It's cool to see first hand - and makes for great photos - imho.

Nice! Doubt I'd ever understand the whole concept but the image is one of the coolest airplane shots I've seen.
Speaking of airplanes, we've found an airshow in our home state in a couple of months. I'll have to study moving airplane photography since I'm off that week.

Lol - I hope I don't sound like I even remotely think I know what I'm talking about - aerothermal dynamics?? I'm just a photographer, man :)

Make an effort to take in the show - if you even remotely have interest in aircraft - I thoroughly enjoy them.

Yupp. The same effect can be seen (sometimes) around the winglets on race cars. I have a similar sequence of shots of an F22 (I believe this is an F22, yes?), but used the 50D back then, so I cannot post it here.

Cheers.

Any clues you can put into a paragraph on what settings/lenses etc.
I have noticed a lot of airshows shot with 100-400 now that I'm looking.
I showed the she-boss the dates of the next and seemed interested-last she saw was as a child.
Be a fun road-trip regardless.

I shot these with a Sigma 150-600 Sport. Rarely did I find the need to go full out at 600. Most seemed around the 300-450 range, and there were certainly a number of 100-400's in sight. This was at 340, shot in Tv mode, as the cloud cover was variable, with a shutter speed of 1/1250 ISO 200. Pp in LR cc.

I'm actually surprised that 1/1250 stops a jet in it's tracks.

As long as you are panning it is more than adequate. Pick a single focus point, help it on the canopy or one of the markings and make sure you keep following through as the plane moves across in front on you - a bit like a golfer or any other sports person who follows through when taking a shot.

If you want to use IS make sure it is in Mode 2 or 3, or turn it off altogether with such a high shutter speed. Biggest problem with turning it off us forgetting yo turn it back on when lowering the shutter speed to below 1/400 sec for the propeller driven planes to get prop blur and prevent 'frozen props'.

Exposure wise if using auto metering I find evaluative or partial/centre weighted works best, spot can be thrown off too easily if the spot goes of the aircraft of hits a bright spot. Depending on the sky I will tend to use around +1 stop Exposyre compensation ( blue sky ) and up to +2 stops for bright white/grey cloud.

If the sky is a constant colour, ie clear blue or solid constant cloud I may go Manual exposure, but any time the us variable cloud cover then I find Auto exposure best.

Hope that helps

This gal can PLAY!!! Granted she's only 12 years old... But she's got finesse, control, and an eye on where to place the puck in the net... 1D4 + 135L combo in a very poorly lit indoor ice rink... ISO 1250, f/2.2 @ 1/500sec...

:D
