A heavily cropped shot but still glad to see this, rare in the location it was in:

Another shot I took with the 1DmkIV today, this time a much closer bird, so close in fact that I couldn't get him all in the frame!

With so many new and happy 1D Mark IV owners here, I thought I should share this:

https://www.youtube.com …1&list=PL2693CA6711866931 (external link)

13 short videos about camera settings. Every now and then I come back to it to jog my memory.

I hope this helps someone.

Cheers.

Thanks, RAW-Shooter. I'll come back to it as I sure need to get some education on the settings!

Went to the park around sunrise. Beautiful light. This is uncropped and I chose to keep it that way. It's strange, but the longer I've been photographing birds the more I like showing the bird in its habitat. I did very little to the image. I applied a bit of noise reduction and very little output sharpening. I know it won't be to everybody's liking as it could be argued it's too bright and needs to be toned down, but I love it just as it is. I only wish I could have stopped down the lens and have both birds in focus.

And here a Great Crested Grebe. Taken near sunset.
I'm still debating whether the little bug should be in or out...

These are both gorgeous, Levina. I like the high(ish) key of the herons and, anyway, it's what you like that matters.

As for the grebe, just love the light. Who knew a grebe had such beautiful eyes! I would leave the bug in, but it's your call.

Thanks very much, Annie.

I like the Grebe with the bug too. I just wonder if people can actually see it's a bug instead of a small smudge and if therefore it would be better to clone it out. But nice to know you like it in too!

I love environmental pics as well though I'm guilty of often trying to see their retina!
Too bright? I bet that is exactly the lighting extent at the time of capture.
I can see why you like it as is, me too :)

Now this one is just plain beautiful. Didn't notice the bug until I read your discussion with Annie :)
I was drawn to the enticing red eye and the pinkish beak.

You are absolutely right, this is how it was and why I decided to leave it alone in post. Thank you, Robert!

They are beautiful birds and although they are changing into their Winter coats now the light helped bring out the colours that are still there. You should see them in their breeding plumage! Thanks again, Robert.
