Yes, sounds like user error to me too. Get to know the camera first before dismissing it like that. I've shot birds with a 40D, a 5Dc, a 1DIIN and a 1DIII and the 1DIV beats them all in the AF department. Read the manual and read Canon's AF guide.

I can assure you its not user error, this is not my first camera!!

'the focus point was jumping around as if it was having a fit' - sounds to me like it may have been set to all 45 points by mistake, that is the only way I have ever known the focus points the move around on the 1DIV......

Graham it is definitely NOT on all 45 points, I have double and triple checked the settings.

Then maybe you hadn't selected a single focus point but instead had it set on Automatic AF point selection? Although that would indicate you were in One Shot mode for the focus points to light up in red, which would make little sense when shooting and tracking a flying object...

Maybe there's something wrong with the camera?

Levina, I was in AI Servo, I only use one shot for landscapes. I will check out if its on Automatic AF thank you. Don't get me wrong people I really want to get on with this camera, perhaps my patience level is dropping with my age.

If the camera is on Automatic AF then the focus points only light up in red in One Shot mode. In AI Servo they would not light up at all, hence my remark.

As to getting to know the camera, it was advice based on my own experience, because with every new 1D body I purchased, I had to study the AF system as it got ever more advanced.

And if i don't have that issue with my 1D3 or say i had it then fixed it then 1D4 should be even better or no issue at all, we talked about the camera itself, but i also pointed you to the lens itself.

Did you test the camera with different lenses too?

'My' focus points are lighting up in AI Servo mode.

Tareq- yes I tried it with my 100mm 2.8 as well, same 'problem'. At the moment I only own the two lenses. I will work through the manual yet again, perhaps I'm doing something really stupid.

Unique to the 1d4 is the option to set "expansion" to include all AF points.
Even so, it shoudl not behave as badly as you describe were it set up that way.

I'm at work without a 1D4 in hand, so can't walk you through anything step by step, but it really does sound like something is letting the camera jump use all 45 AF points.

Check out this video, maybe it will help;

And sorry if any of us sound like we are talking down to you. In trying to help we may not know what you do and don't already know! :)

In light of that, can I ask, is this your first 1D body?
They have a decidedly different menu system and some dissimilar controls compared to other EOS bodies.

This is still unclear to me. Does this mean a single AF point is lighting up?
If so, this was part of what led me to think about the custom function that enables all 45 AF points to be usable as "expansion"

Yes Jake it does. And thanks to Levina I now have a single focus point which is what I want. It is lit up, then very briefly it flashes brightly when I obtain focus then reverts to a duller red. This is the first 1D series model I have owned. Previous 110D 7D1, 70D, 7D2 (which I sold to buy the 1D4).
I was seriously disappointed yesterday due to missing the helicopter fighting the fire hence my 'outburst' over the 1D4:oops:. I can understand long time users loyalty to the 1D4.

You did not offend me:-) In the time I have owned the camera it has not been dropped as I treat them as if they are made out of glass- yes I know!!, and I've not cleaned the contacts. Yesterday I took some shots of hummingbird moths and these guys are so fast and the camera did not miss a shot...so hopefully I'm back in the game. When I go back to the UK in Dec I will send it off to Canon for a service.
