Exposure compensation is not available on the 1D4 in manual mode. This feature was added in the 1DX I believe. However, you can essentially do the same thing if you use AE Microadjust in conjunction with manual aperture, manual shutter speed and auto ISO ...

a question for the more experienced 1d4 users ,i use mine 95% of the time with my sigma 150-600 sport ,and due to aperture limitations and u.k weather i have recently found(last weekend) that the best way to use this particular camera is in M manual exposure mode and auto iso ,however with birds in flight i often like to apply positive exposure compensation ,i can't seem to apply that i can only alter shutter speed or f stop .
the only way i seem to be able to do it is to come out of auto iso

HELP

This is normal behavior for an SLR with auto exposure. When you are in manual, there is no "Exposure compensation" because there is no auto exposure for you to compensate for. Your "EC" adjustment is to simply alter aperture, shutter speed, or in DSLR case, ISO to change the manual exposure you have.

That said, with the most modern DSLR, there is now often an "EC" adjustment in manual that will in essence do the same thing as bumping or reducing the ISO setting, while maintaining your manually set shutter and aperture.

In practice it's all the same thing, notice you need more light, and adjust one of the three factors (if we include ISO) with a dial to let in more light.

thanks for the feedback lads ,now added just plus 1/8th to see how that goes for normal work ,and i guess i'll have to simply switch off auto iso for b.i.f ..i also think that i might have had the lens set up incorrectly for use with this camera i must have changed the settings for the 1D3 to speed it up and forgotten i had done it .now changed it back to my old settings

True, but work-arounds exist that yield the same thing. You can shoot in Av mode, where EC is available, and lock Tv to one specific value (set available high and low shutter speeds to the same value) via a Custom Function. It is cumbersome, but it works. And you can still use auto-ISO.

Same setup works in Tv, if you fix aperture to one value. I used this setup for outdoor sports/action every time I shot that stuff. Tv @ 1/800, lock aperture to f/8, auto-ISO, and +1/3 or +2/3 EC. Works like a charm.

Sometimes I really miss my 1D4.

Thanks for these two related tips ... cumbersome, but useful if you need the capability!

couple from sat ,now getting used to shooting in M mode with auto iso ,these were taken in deep woodland with glaring sunlight coming through in places ,i did initially up the e.v value as suggested but i am now realising its better to trust the camera rather than the view on the rear screen .really starting to love this beast .the rest will follow

Had no idea of the place until my father in law told me about it while driving past to our ski resort in Italy. Just had to stop to take pictures.

Froze my butt off! :)
