Let me put it this way: I just picked up another 1D IV with 77K shutter actuations. I know there are better camera bodies out the but I can't afford them at the moment.

The 1D IV is simple to use, fast, handles like a dream, and gives me colors I wasn't seeing from my 7D2. The 5D 4 is probably better in some ways but still more expensive. The next two 1D models are also out of my price range.

x2 ^^ (Cut) "once you shoot a D series, you'll have a hard time going back" - and I would agree. (Cut).

My thoughts absolutely.

Not to belittle the 7D2 in any way, but I believe right now that a good 1D4 is the best bargain in Canon's range. If you want a powerful action camera, tough as nails, with superb focus, etc. it's a beast!! A wonderful precision tool at a great price ...

The only way mine is disappearing from my gear shelf is if a 1DX or 1DX2 magically appears there.

x2 ^^ It's my main body and love it. Prior to picking it up, I recalled a number of comments about how "once you shoot a D series, you'll have a hard time going back" - and I would agree. Majority of my work is sports, and I love my 1D MkIV. Now, if I could only figure out how to make it a back up to a nice (new to me) 1DX......

Isn't that the truth. I shoot side by side with a 7D II shooter at night time football games , and I would not trade my MK IV for anything except a newer model 1D.

I can't stand image quality from Canon APS-C sensors, so the 7D series is dead to me (I've dissected RAWS and can't put my finger on it, but I'm not a fan). The 1D4 and 1D3 are amazing for their respective prices. From battery life to colors to blistering speed/response - these are great bodies.

I'm excited to buy a 1DX in a couple years when it's sitting at $1K used, but I'm doing just dandy with the 1D4 now (I sold my 1D3 to my brother-in-law, who's now hooked on 1D bodies).

I love my 1D4 too. I would never choose a 7D2 over a 1D4. But I'm spoiled no doubt by having shot with a 1D body since 2012. They're just awesome cameras.

wow. I just stumbled across this thread because I'm in a bind(7d mk2 vs 1d mk iv). I shoot w/ a 1DX and a 7Dmk2 as a remote. I'm on the fence whether I should switch my 7d mk2 to a 1d mark iv. I would love to have a 1dx as a 2nd body, but I can't personally justify it. I love the FF "look" and I'm hoping the 1d mark iv would get me closer. just gleaning whatever I can off this conversation. thx folks!

I just added a second 1D IV as a backup and to have a two camera setup while out birding. I have been much happier with the 1D IV's than I was with my 7D2. I just got a 6Dc and truth be told, I can't tell the difference between any of my three cameras other than the 6Dc focuses in very low light while the 1D IV just hunts. In the right light conditions, the ID IV seems to produce the right colors... it records what I see. I'm not sure if this is helpful for your decision, but I made my choice a few years ago and haven't been disappointed. For wildlife and on a restricted budget, the 1D IV isn't your 1D X... but it's as close as I can get at this point.

Thanks. I sold my 6Dc since i was pivoting towards sports. I'm leaning heavily towards the 1d iv. The 7D2 is an awesome body, my favorite feature is the "rate" button on the back to help me w/ my post-processing after an intense day of shooting. At any rate, I get what you mean especially processing images simultaneously from a 1DX & a 7D2.

For me it’s only needing the 1 battery type and charger, and they can be used in any of the 1 series cameras.. I’ve never owner a 7d ii, but I don’t think you can beat the feel or build quality of a 1d..

Most of this page seems to be comparing the 1D4 to other bodies, mainly the 7D2. I sold my 1D4 after verifying that my new 80D can keep up the AF I had come to expect from the 1D4. For my uses, the 80D AF keeps up with the 1D4 AF just fine (lenses primarily 100-400Lc/70-200 f/4L IS). Honestly, I did prefer the look of the 1D4 files over those of the 80D.

I down-sized my body due to some shoulder problems. The 80D is quickly becoming my 'general' shooter over the 6D. That was NEVER going to happen with the 1D4. What I really miss about the 1D4 was the huge range of custom functions and customize-ability. Well, that and 10 FPS!

Mmmmm...10 fps goodness. I rarely shot at 10 fps, though. Since I traded up to the 5D4, my attention has been on learning that camera, with it's options and intricate AF system. When I do pick up the 1DIV, it reminds me why I own it. I've thought about letting it go, but then I pick it up and that fleeting thought is gone.

The 5D IV photos do seem to come out well, judging by what's been posted here. I know people say.. it's the photographer, not the camera, but from my own experience, it's a combination. As Tom mentioned, the files from the 1D IV are nice. I think its strengths have made me a better photographer. I only use the 10 fps when I shooting birds in flight. It does come in handy there.

I say this a lot, probably because I'm a color blind man. The 1D IV gets the colors right. Other people can play around with color adjustments. I make horrible mistakes when I try that unsupervised. I was post processing a kitchen for my wife a few years ago and when she looked at my final take, she cringed and said: do you know you made all the recessed lights red? I had no idea. Anyway, the 1D IV files catch what I saw at the time I took the photograph. That ends up being huge for me. As long as I do my part, the camera performs flawlessly. It's not an indoor camera, at least, not for me. But most of what I do is outdoors and it really shines there.

I'll bet the 5D IV is similar in that regard, with more flexibility indoors. I might end up with one some day. I'd rather had a 1D X2, but that isn't likely at the moment. ;)
