They surely can be, but for the most part they are more wary of people than people are of them.

Hi everyone, I do own the camera for some time now and it was on a shelf for several months and few days ago I decided to take it for a walk and...it turned out, if I use speed up to 1/125s, pictures are taken properly, everything looks normal. If I set 1/160s or higher shutter speed - I get a black. I mean - the photo is pure black. Nothing on it. Checked on a computer. Doesn't matter what F or what ISO is set - 1/125s and bellow works as you would expect, anything 1/160s and over is black picture. No error message. Updated firmware (from 1.1.14 to 1.1.15), even cleared all custom functions, nothing changed. The camera is taking pictures in high speed sequence properly, the shutter sounds ok. No idea what happened, have any of you heard about this before? Did it happened to anyone? I couldn't find anything like that on the internet and I am panicking a bit :) Thanks for any info/recommendations!

Not sure, but it sounds like a setting. I know you said you cleared custom functions, but that doesn't clear the other settings. You may a safety shift setting or something going on. Try a factory reset.

Can you host two example images, one at 1/125 and one at 1/160, with the exit data intact, so we can look at them?

Don’t know if it will help, but you never know.

Maybe check with the mirror locked up and make sure the shutter is opening and closing at the higher speeds?

One at 1/125 and one at 1/160 attached. Exif present. Well, difference of day and night :D As for advice to clear settings - there are 2. One for camera settings and one for custom functions. Reseted both. Not sure how to factory reset (the 2 buttons for it from 1D mk II didn't reset). In any case...the only thing I haven't tried is with some flash mounted on a hot shoe. But even then, the sync time for those is higher.

Also, it looks like the shutter is opening and closing the same on lower as on higher speeds - tried with the mirror locked up. A bit fast for my eyes, but it looked ok. I guess it would show me the Err 30 if the shutter was the problem, right?

I have no idea. It was just a thought. It may not throw an error if it works sometimes, but not others. I'm not a technician. But, I know electronics are extremely predictable and unpredictable at the same time. :-P ;-)a :-P
