I'm just wondering if there is a size maximum that is compatible with the 5d classic, or what speed will suffice. if anyone could suggest the best card for the 5d that isn't like $150 bucks, that would be awesome.

thanks.

Sandisk Ultras are pretty cheap.

best bang for buck is probably an 8 gig ultra II from sandisk, in my opinion. About 60 bucks.

I use a Kingston 16GB card, no problems and the 5D has no issues with it. If you shoot jpeg, the counter will say 999 (only 3 digits), if you shoot RAW you wont have that problem

Considering the burst speed of a 5D I don't think the card is that critical. I'd get more cheaper cards then blowing excessively on one card. There's no need for "ultra" anything.

I disagree, are you comparing it to your 7D?

Yes, it's only 3FPS, and yes the buffer is 17 images (RAW), but once you fill those up, it's a pain waiting for slower CF cards to have the data written onto them.

I haven't pushed the buffer on my 5D yet, but I certainly noticed slower cards on the 40D. The buffer would fill after like 10 frames, and then I was getting something like 1 frame per second. My SanDisk Extreme III (4gb) seemed to make a noticable difference over cheaper cards.

I currently have an Ultra II 8gb that stays in the camera, but I keep one of my Extreme IIIs in the bag to use if I need to take several in a row, like during sports, or my daughter at a park.

If you rarely shoot a bunch in a row, you might be able to get away with the Ultra II, and they are considerably cheaper.

BTW, Staples and Office Depot seem to often have the Ultra II 8gb for $20 in their ad. I haven't looked since Christmas, but I saw that deal a few times before the holiday.
