Vivitar 365- how to trigger?

I was just given an old(I think) flash system- Vivitar 365, with a Vivitar Vari Sensor, 3 batteries and a charger (12V cig lighter plug).

I charged up a battery and pushed the test flash button and found that it does still work.

I've read here that some of these older flash units are not safe for newer cameras. So if that is so in this case (I have a 20d & 50D) how can I safely trigger this thing?

You´ll need to get it off camera with triggers.
