Looking at my stats for yesterday I noticed one of the referring domains was fiveprime.org.....When I clicked on the link I was surprised to find my whole photo stream was on display. I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I never gave anyone permission to post any of my photos but at the same time, no one else is taking credit for my photos as all the photos are credited to my Flickr username. It's just odd to me. Is this legal? below are links to my flickr page and to the fiveprime.org page.

It looks like someone who has been playing with Flickr API and has developed their own version of the Flickr tools.

It's totally legit under the terms of Flickr, but odd, I agree.

Yeah, I've had individual photos that linked back to people's personal blogs and things like that but never 3 full pages of my photostream. I guess I need to read the flickr rules a little closer. I didnt think you could just take someone's photos without permission and display them.

Ummm...yeah.

I just did a search of my user name on fiveprime and guess what...my entire flickr photostream came up too.

All seems a little suspect.

This is actually a feature. The site is using Flickr's programming API to bring in photos. This is a good thing.

I can see how you'd be a bit skeptical about it and it's usage, but when used in other ways, it allows you bring in photos onto your site, from Flickr without having to use the Flickr gallery script, or an iframe, etc..

I used the same API to bring my Flickr photos into my website here: http://toddlambert.com/photos/ (external link)

Now, the question for this topic, needs to be why are you getting referrals from this site? Who is going to that url and using your Flickr name? Most likely, it is this site has a random setup that brings in random photos - which, one was from your site. That's my guess.

Thanks Todd,

I figured the may have been something to do with flickr with all the flickr logos but you never know with the amount of fake, official looking websites these days.

So is it safe to that when you put your photos on a hosting site like Flickr and have a photostream thats viewable to the public, they have rights to use your photos as long as they're not printing them or selling them?
In a way, they're using them to promote their own website and I have pictures of my daughter and other kids who's parents may not like the fact that they're out there for anyone to use as they like.

THey aren't "using" your photos. They are providing a viewer to load your flickr hosted photos. The photos never leave flickr's database. fiveprime, etc, is just calling up the link to your photo by searching flickr's database and loading a thumbnail preview from flickr. It's not the same as if I did a right-click, save as and then hosted a copy of your image on my website.

I understand that they're not "using" them in the sense that they've been stolen and someone else is claiming my work for their benefit, trust me, just look at the pictures ;-)a However, When I joined Filckr I thought it was safe to assume my photostream would only be seen there. This is like someone took 3 pages of my stuff and moved my account to another domain name.
I know it's not that big of a deal, I'm just having a hard time understanding what exactly fiveprime is and what someone's motivation would be to create it in the first place.

Someone decided they could write a better search interface for flickr and the motivation is in the banner ads on the bottom of each page.

If you aren't a big fan of this, you can make your images private, or get something like smugmug or zenfolio. Flickr is kind of designed as an uber photo sharing site. I can share your images with people, too.

FWIW, without being logged into a flickr account, I can download full resolution versions of all your images. So you may want to look into that first if you are worried about image protection.
