Are both your images and your cache on the SSD?

for the test yes.

For anyone else doing this, update your bois. Took me a couple hours to figure out that was causing problems. YP5 Toronto, how are you getting write speeds of 400 MB/s? Is that because you are running three drives?

Still getting the loading in lightroom, but its a little better.

So, as far as I can tell, to get better write performance, I would need 3 drives. Don't know if its worth it at this point.

I'm wondering if instead of getting an i7 maybe getting a 64GB Kingston V+ SSD would give me a decent speed boost for less money - NZ$320/US$250 or so.

I'd want 20GB as OS, then 44GB as data space. That'd let me put a wedding or two one and keep it on the SSD while I was actively working on it. I have a dedicated hard disk for cache, but maybe i'd just have Bridge export the cache to the ssd.

I use XP32, and I process 20GB of data per wedding in CS4 Bridge. Are SSDs ok with XP32? Is that trim thing that was a big deal a while ago worked out now? Can I image my spinning disk then throw the image onto the SSD easily?

Does anyone who processes 1000+ images in a sitting have any practical feedback on the practical performance increase?

Yes, this makes a gigantic difference. However, I would not fill the drive. Filling any hard drive reduces performance. You might want to wait for a 128 GB to do what you are describing.

You will notice far more improvement using an intewl based SSD as your O.S. than you will upgrading to an I7. Bank on that.

Thanks guys. I don't much care how long preview rendering takes, that can happen while i'm doing something else. I'm only concerned about interactive speed. When I open a 7D RAW file (30MB or so) or move to the next one inside ACR it can take about half a second to apply my modifications to say exposure. It doesn't sound like much, but it's just enough to get annoying.

It sounds like there's not much point without an i7 and Windows 7. I guess i'll wait, and upgrade one day. I'm not that busy this season so i'll get by fine, and i'll upgrade next season.

Definitely make sure you put Windows 7 on an Intel based SSD. Watch this video to see why ;)

44 apps loading at once on the cheapest intel based SSD:

Starting 51 apps at once in Windows Vista with a Western Digital Raptor versus Intel SSD:

lol! The SSD goes around again and beats it still!

There's really no point in going to an i7 without an SSD. In fact, you will see a bigger difference keeping your standard quad core or dual core and going to SSD.

The difference is tremendous between HDD and SSD. The most beautiful thing of all is SSD's are completely silent and use less power. A big win/win.

you went and got another intel? ....something isnt right then with the write speeds. Have you done all the "tweaks" to pull all the performance out?

Yeah, second intel. From all I've been reading on other forums looks like normal write speeds. Its just that one post on oztech where the guy has three drives and is getting speeds like you are. I don't know if its a raid thing at this point. I've run all the tweaks and only improved about 50 MB/s. I probably should have done 3 x 60 gb drives, but I think I'm out of luck for now :-(
