I have just been messing about with my FD 100 Macro on my 450D, using an FD-EOS converter.
Comments would be appreciated.

Looks like you need some more dramatic lighting and perhaps a little better background to add to the image. I'd also adjust the white balance and perhaps set the ring at a slight angle to the camera. If you'd like I can repost an image I did recently of my wedding band as an example of some of what I am referring to. I'm new to close up work but I think we were thinking the same when we took the shots. Scott Evans Photography

The background was white plastic laminate ( kitchen worktop) and the lighting was from a natural daylight lamp that I use for watercolour painting. I would be grateful if you would post your photograph. Alan, you sound like me in that I don't use any studio type setup, just whatever is in front of me. Bear in mind that I am new to macro type stuff but here's the ring...Handheld with tubes on an 85 f1.8. Exif is intact. I used one on camera flash with a Lumiquest softbox then bounced that off the ceiling at fairly low power (I can't recall exactly but I think it was around 1/16). The ring was set on a mirror on the kitchen counter, nothing else fancy with it. Anyway, here's my take which is much like yours just using different lighting... Scott Evans Photography

Thanks for the post. Your lighting is very different from mine, much cooler in temperature. I only have the pop-up flash on the camera at the moment, will have to build up my kit sloooowly. I have just ordered a remote shutter release which should help with longer exposures. Alan. flickr

I think I shall try a little PP and see what I get, if any better I shall post the results for scrutiny. ![]() I was quite pleased that I got a result at all, considering I was using an FD lens on a digital camera, focusing manually was tricky to say the least, I also found it difficult to achieve a decent DOF. I like this forum, a lot of good advice for a newbie to digital photography. You bet. I found the manual focusing and tiny DOF tough as well. Brian suggested focus stacking and I think it has its place but not for what I was going for here. I think we just need to keep practicing and enjoying the journey. Scott Evans Photography
