The manual that comes with the camera has a lot of great tips and hints on how to use your camera to the most. Sounds like a great beginner setup you have going there, just try to learn the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Take a few test shots at different settings to see the difference, and try not to use any other mode besides Av (Aperture Value), Tv (Time Value), or Manual otherwise you'll be lugging around a huge point and shoot.

Welcome Lee. This forum, while sometime intimidating due to the level of expertise, is very helpful. The "search" feature is your friend. Most of the questions you have are already posted and answered here from prior Newb's like myself. My advice to you is to read your manual, hang out on this forum, buy a "Canon Rebel for Dummies" book....or something like that, buy Understanding Exposure....and then read it more than once, and lastly get out there and shoot as much as you can.

Monst0r's got it right, excellent advice. I have had my Rebel XS a year now and I love it. Most all the shots on my website are with the Rebel XS - it's a great starter camera.
