I just happened to drive by this tree while on vacation in Florida last week. It's a live oak that measures 23.5ft in circumference at the trunk. My photos could never do it justice. I have included a link to a story about the tree that shows a photo of it with some local residents in 1872.

Interesting storey, thanks for posting Mike.
Love the storey of the bloke standing guard and his shotgun.
Good to see the interest in its preservation.

Couldn't get that link to work

Edit. After I posted this I see the link works in your quoted part. Wonder what's going on with original?

Thanks Richard. Not sure what's going on with the link. I tried to edit and repost it but something wonky is going on.

I did post that query on the forum talk. Pekka might have some input
I replied, edited my reply, deleted the links to your images, didn't touch your link, and reposted

Edit. Pekka said he thinks there's a bug causing issue

It's a very visual landmark around here

Wonderful tree Candor, thanks for sharing it and those historic shots. You are right, that there is no way a photo can actually capture the splendor of being near the actual tree.
I would however like to share my thoughts. Adding people can help give some scale, BUT not always in a good way. When people are out in front, it makes the tree look smaller than it actually is. I always try to have them off to the sides, on the centerline perpendicular to the photographer.
