Help!

My 5D is behaving very strangely.

I had a shoot last night and I popped in fresh batts, put on my 24-70 a CF Card and flipped the on Switch....Nothing. Pushed the Shutter button a few times...no response.

I then turned it off, opened the CF Card door, pulled the card, pushed it back in firmly, closed the door firmly and turned it back on...Nothing.

I turned it off, twisted off the lens. Twisted it back on firmly, turned it back on...Nothing.

FInally i open the batt grip door and popped both batts out, switched their placements and this time my 5D turned on!

During the shoot the following happened, my 5D would take pictures but for some reason after taking an image, it would stay busy. The red light by the big dial in the back would remain on, if I pressed the shutter button it would say "busy" in the little lcd display. When it did that I left it for a min, but there was no change. I eventually turned it off and the red light by the dial would remain on.

Frustrated, i opened the CF card door and pulled the card. This did turn that light off.

Have the symptoms happened to anyone else? Is there a troubleshoot type place i can be pointed to?

THANKS

Try first without the battery grip - the contacts might be dirty.

Yeah try it without the grip.
Make sure to use a known good flash card is good, format.
Try a hard reboot by pulling the main battery and back up. The volatile memory can sometimes become corrupted.
If that fails it sounds like an internal problem.

I've had a couple of similar moments when my 30D stopped working for no apparent reason. On one of those occasions it was rather important I continued shooting. Switching the whole thing to JPEG saved my bacon. Half an hour later everything was fine again!

I've read a handful of threads reporting similar happenings, every time the cure was different. There seems to be no common cause linking them that I have been able to discern.

I've mentally shrugged my shoulders, muttered "bloody digital cameras" and forgotten about it.

That could be a flash card issue.
If it continues I try another formatted flash card, then a hard reboot, and if all that fails, Canon.

Sounds very similar to when my B10905 8GB Extreme IV card failed on me(red light staying on and such).

I think there are two issues here, corrupted memory card and the battery grip wasn't making good contact. I'd format the memory card and see if the problem fixes itself.

Mine did similar things recently, eventually it sat dead and did nothing. I returned it to Canon (WELL out of warranty) and they repaired it for free. Sorry, can't remember exactly what it was, I think something inside the CF compartment. Considering the age of the body I was happy with the repair price! :D

I usually do format my CF cards every time i shoot. Last night I didn't for whatever reason.

It's frustrating that it's so inconsistent, makes it hard to trouble shoot.
