So I had been reading the Rant in the Sports talk forum about how cameras aren't allowed at NBA venues.
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=776946
It seems that it is not a NBA thing, but a team and venue thing. I was allowed to bring any (still) camera and any lens that I wanted to the Pepsi Center. I even call guest relations and asked before last nights game, they said that the Nuggets and the Pepsi Center had just recently changed that rule to allow photography from the seats. I'm not sure they would be happy with a 400 f2.8 and niether would I. Small seats and no mono or tripods are allowed.
So my son, me and my 40D with my 70-200 f4L went and had a great time.

#1, Chauncey Billups calling a play.

#2, The result of that play. In the rules for the fans they say, "No flash Photography from the stands." Someone didn't turn their P&S flash off and I caught it. Melo scored anyway!

#3, The nuggets D was on fire and really held Orlando in check. No fouls on this play, Melo steals the ball!
IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/4274710644_1a0483a7ff_b.jpg

#4, A little Dancer action too. Definantly no fouls here!
IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4273963617_cdb009b128_b.jpg

#5, Meeeeeeeeeeelo, is the call that goes out after each basket he makes.
IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2691/4273966333_a6e7e183e1_b.jpg

#6, Oh, and don't leave him uncovered at range either. 3!
IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4024/4274710014_91afa3a7da_b.jpg

#7, A high percentage Birdman 2.
IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4027/4273966767_df48ca565f_b.jpg

#8, Orlando's #7 had no luck against Melo all night. Anthony just went right around this guy, strong!

It was a lot of fun to take but my son and my camera to the game. I wish we were a bit more center courtish, but what'cha going to do? I was really surprise with the available light at the Pepis Center. Of course there is some motion blur in these images, but for the most part I was happy with the results. It was also fun to watch the working photogs do their job. Lots of ceiling mounted strobes all over the place.

Have you checked the venue web site and called guest relations? It couldn't hurt to try.

I never did call him a good defender. Anthony ran around that guy quite a bit. It was a fun game to see. The Nuggets really whipped up on the Magic and totally stone walled Howard.

A great defender in the NBA, no. A GREAT free throw shooter in college, yes.

He nailed a few 3's at the end of the game, but with 5:30 left in the game the rest of his team gave up. And at that point the Magic were still in range. Garbage time started early and was a little long. The crowd started heading out at 4 mins left.

Thanks guys. I had the WB set a bit low on the Kelvin scale, but it was totally managable in PP.

In the original imaged (this is a crop) Chris Anderson is completely washed in white light from the side. His left side was just gone. Also, if that was a house strobe the area of wash out would be greater. Anthony is untouched by the flash. The light from a house strobe would have come from above and not the side. After I saw that I pointed my lens toward the crowd and found the person who did it. Someone with a P&S in those rows of seats behine the baseline and behine the floor photogs, just popping away.

Was the image taken as a vertical originally? It doesnt matter where the light is coming from. The only thing that matters is which direction the shutter travels.

That was definitely a venue strobe which fired after your shutter was already closing. If you look you'll see they're illuminated from all four corners of the arena. No P&S can do that. ;)

I deal with that at least 3-4 times a game as I'm not worthy of a venue strobe. :(

were allowed to do photos just no flash here in the thunder dome, aka the Oklahoma City Ford Center. They actually encourage photo taking.

i'll be in the stands on friday night and sunday night i'll try to get a few pics with the new 70-200 2.8
