I really love 70-200s (I got f4, f4IS and now F2.8 ) IQ. I already own a 24-105L. I'm looking for the same IQ, Color and contrast of 70-200 for my standard zoom. Do I need to upgrade to 24-70L ? Is it that better ?
Thanx

I used to own the 24-105 and exchanged it for the 24-70L a few years ago. I think the 24-70 is better, but the 24-105 did produce one of my personal favourite images of a paddle steamer on lake Como, using film no less, so don't go thinking you will see dramatic improvements.

NO zoom is sharper than the 70-200 L IS f4. I've had many 24/28-70 offerings from Canon and hated them all. I just sold mine waiting for the 2.8 mark II. The 24-70 has a better IQ than the 24-105. Wait for a mark II 24-70.

Well, in all fairness, the 17-55 is a tad sharper in the center, but alas.. it won't fit his camera.

I was not talking about sharpness. I'm talking about color, contrast, rendition. You know, this WOW factor 70-200s have.

There are some lenses which have really impressed me with their WOW factor. There was an old 200mm manual focus Canon prime, the 35mm Zeiss supplied with the M-2 Leica rangefinder kit for the Navy, my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and, believe it or not, my 12-24mm f/4 Tokina which has also become one of my favorite lenses. I realize that this is not a medium range zoom lens at 28mm to about 42mm equivalent - but WOW is WOW - no matter what the focal length.

Don't wait for something that might not ever come. The 24-70 is very good lens that is easily on par with my 70-200.

When I first got my 24-70 I was wowed by its color and contrast. Not sure about sharpness but I felt it was very similar to my 70-200 2.8 IS. Not sure which ones sharper since I didn't do intense tests. There's a high chance of picking up a lemon when you order a 24-70. So I decided to use craiglist and was able to try the lens before I bought it.

Yes. I love my 24-70. Paired up with the 70-200 it is perfect. In fact, those are the only two lenses I use now.
