55-250 lens + TC

I have a Rebel T1i + 55-250 lense. I need more reach for birding while keeping the light weight and porability and spending minimal $$. I can accept average IQ and 2 stop less light and shot at f/11 with ISO 1600 or 3200 then run NR in post processing.

Can anyone comment on putting a 2.0x TC between the Rebel and EF-S lense? I know the Canon TC will not fit with EF-S lenses so I'm thinking maybe a Sigma or other would fit.

Thanks

Due to the protruding element of the EF-S design there are no TCs that will fit 3rd party or otherwise.

There are no TC's for EF-S lenses sadly, the 55-250 is such a nice lens for the price.

Someone told me the Sigma PRO 1.4x TC would fit to the EF-S. Is that right?

Dunno, but you would also lose auto-focus, just in case you didn't know that.

as far as i know no TC's will fit the 55-250mm...i read the sigma is closer to the canon, and doesn't even fit some EF lenses...

I know the Kenko doesn't fit...and that fits all my EF lenses

try and get closer...you'd be amazed how much of a difference just a few more steps can do

I've pretty much decided that unless you are using a prime lens, you are almost better off just cropping. Would you rather be left with 7 sharp MP, or 10 softer ones?

which TC and lens combo did you use that resulted in such poor quality?...honestly my 70-300mm with 1.4TC doesn't seem to drop off that much at all...

But it does drop off some, right? And you lose a stop, so slower shutter speed AND a longer lens - more potential for handshake or higher ISO noise. Have you tried comparing TC vs cropping?

you forgot to answer my question...

it does drop off slightly...not enough that i can instantly tell which shot was with a TC, and which shot was not

i'm not sure if it's the case for most that use my combo...but for some reason my TC, plus 70-300mm usually overexposes the scene by 2/3 of a stop or so...so i need to dial in the EC, and the shutter speed is usually not dropping that low...anyways that's why i have IS

I have tried comparing the cropped image with the TC image...and they look about the same...but the thing is I can also crop the TC image...that's when the difference becomes more noticeable...when you're making a huge crop on one compared to a smaller crop on another

Never said I had used a specific combo. I am basing off tests I have seen that led me to not buy a certain lens and TC combo or certain cheap long glass. Plenty of samples and crops are out there to make informed decisions.

Here's one thread with some crop vs TC comparisons:

there certainly are...i think that my faith in some of those sites has started to wane...I'd recommend renting one maybe once if you were really thinking about it...who knows you may be surprised that you actually like it:)

yeah, i remember that thread...i think the o.p, in that one also failed to realize that you can also crop the TC shot as well...i agree TC shot plus crop equivalent shot do look similar...it's the TC shot plus crop...vs. more of a crop where i'd rather have a TC on...

and TC or not i think we all want more reach...so even with the TC on I still crop most of the time of the time i use it(which isn't the majority btw) :)

I think to really compare TC vs crop well (and TC + crop vs heavy cropping), you'd really have to look at prints. It's not really possible to do a 1:1 comparison on the screen, because they don't have the same number of pixels (obviously).

Yeah, I find myself cropping a lot, but I think that has more to do with my poor framing than anything else. :) My 1600px (long edge) photos on Flickr cover a multitude of sins, though. (I don't print much at all.)
