Nearly a year ago I was in Italy, and somehow I never posted any photos but the ones from Cinque Terre. Probably because those were the most impressive... anyway, here's a set from Lucca. For anyone who doesn't know, Lucca is a walled city which still retains the original medieval wall, which has been updated and thickened over the years: at the moment, the top is paved, and is used as a bike path, which a number of small parks spaced around it. Most of these are more snapshots than art, but I thought people might enjoy them.

1)

2) This one is blurry because it was something like a four second exposure, hand-held: it's a plaque set into the floor of a church, which also explains why it's so worn down.

3) I've mentioned before that I got distracted by ironwork while I was in Italy. This is one of the largest examples.

4) Looking into the city center from the top of the wall.

5) The top of the wall: as you can see, it's substantial.

6) Outside the walls. This is taken from one of those parks I mentioned, which extend outside the wall.

I did not get to go to Lucca when I was there. Now I'm really disappointed! I think I need to go back and correct my omission. ;D

Love the marble carving on the floor. Did you get to see the floor at the Basilica in Siena? There's a poster of it that I'd love to have on my wall.

Satan shudders, and says, "Oh ----, she's awake!"

Lucca and Cinque Terre were definitely the highlights of the trip; they're both amazing!

I unfortunately didn't make it to Siena: there was only so much time, and that didn't make the cut. Next time I expect I will.

JadeMarie, Enjoy! It was definitely one of the nicest places I went... Where are you moving from?

I'm moving from NY, Long Island specifically. Still debating between an apartment inside the wall or a villa outside.

I was in Lucca in 2005. My wife and I ate Lasagna and drank wine at an small outdoor restaurant in the town square while a local band played in the background. It was like something out of a movie. We went back 2 years ago and it was all changed since the tourists found out about it, but Lucca is still a very nice place to visit.

Wow! That's going to be quite a change! I'm envious, though... it's a nice place.

Enjoy it! And I highly recommend renting a bike and going for a ride around the wall... it's fairly cheap, and a lot of fun. Or even just walk it...
