Unfamiliar Territory

I am and always have been more interested in DSLR's, but I have a question for you compact gurus.
A friend of mine wants a compact for no more than £150.
Anything good in perticular?

I hear Canon are generally strong in this field, but don't be afraid about reccomending another brand.... even N*kon

The new batch of compacts cover a wide range, fast and slow lens, several zoom ranges, vga or HD movies, just auto or also manual controls, any idea your friend needs
