I think it's a bit of showing off... Photographers on this site have very big egos I have noticed... I think they should be listed on your profile page only... no one really cares what you have... If I want to know what lens you used to take a photo I will ask... if you list 10 lens in your sig I still have to ask which one was used... it's just an ego thing in my opinion...

I know, right? I'm just sayin'...

I often wonder why people go to the trouble to detail their gear but don't give a link to their photographs.

I'm a beginner and often diligently copy down someone's words of wisdom in my wee notebook and am then a little disappointed I can't see the theory in action.

I should add that I haven't done either because:

a) I'm only starting out so don't feel my list would be of much interest and god forbid someone were to ask me something about an item I own because I would probably struggle to formulate an opinion that would be of any use whatsoever

and

b) I'm horribly embarrassed about how poor my photos are compared to everyone elses!

An excellent point!

(N.B. Both of my sites are listed before my gear ;-)a )

There's an entire subforum and a lens sample archive. If you wanted to see and know about someones opinion, you could always look there... AND see photos taken with the lens you were interested in. I've done it before...

And there is a forum option to not view posters signatures.

... no one really cares what you have...

Why don't you write "I" don't really care what you have? Why try to get more credence by pretending to speak for others?

Lots of people in this thread have stated in this thread, there for all to read, that they appreciate and like reading other posters gear lists.

it's just an ego thing in my opinion

Hmm and posting a link to your images isn't ...............

But then links to their photos/sites/flickr/etc wouldn't be visible.

No, it isn't. If someone posted their pics in their signature, then maybe. But offering samples of their work taken with their gear is another thing entirely. Since we all know (or should know) that fancy gear does not equal good photos, those posters who show off all their fancy gear but don't take good photos is not credible, and should focus on the fundamentals, not L lenses.

How does that affect your photography?

Why so judgemental? Seems the anti's are the ones that get their knickers in a knot. Why or how does it affect you so much?

I also think you're dreaming if you truly believe that posting images isn't ego driven.

I'm for signatures... for any number of arguments above. Sure, some have more in their sig, but its more helpful than harmful. It does bite to keep asking what at poster has already for gear, and to be honest, they don't often like to type it up every time they are asking for technical help and gear advice.

I advice people who hate siggys to not join baby forums, OMG they have these huge pics of their kids and it drives me nuts, takes 5 pages to list 3 posts they are so long :p

I've gone back and forth between having the list in my signature and not. In the end, it doesn't get me any more business and so there's no reason to do it that benefits me. If I do show the list, it may tell people that I know about such and such piece of equipment.

I think that a lot of people do it for critique though, also... some of us are here to learn and improve and know that we're not going to be told how awesome our images are when they're not. I want to be told what's wrong with my pictures so I can fix them. :)
