it's just an ego thing in my opinion...

Indirectly. I would say bragging about pictures is more of an ego thing, because that shows artistic talent. Whereas, amateurs owning a lot of gear show they have more money (which may indicate talent somewhere else, but probably not in the photography world).

In other words, it's the "keeping up with the Joneses" complex for many people.

Only if you wanted to make a stone wheel by using a stone adz. The info may be very useful ;)

(I betcha' someone somewhere in the world is pondering that right now)

Why so judgemental? Seems the anti's are the ones that get their knickers in a knot. Why or how does it affect you so much?

I also think you're dreaming if you truly believe that posting images isn't ego driven.

I don't post images here. Why? No need. I get paid by clients to take photos for them, and it's what they think that really matter. What other people I will likely never meet in my life think of my images to me is irrelevant, since my paying customers like them. There is a link to my website, however, so others can go to my site if they so desire to see my work, especially since I talk a lot about not doing "gimmicky" wedding photos and not over posing pictures. No one is forcing them to click the link.

I'm not offended with people listing their gear, but yeah- it's a bit annoying. Just like people who drive around downtown in their souped up, hotted up car blaring music so everyone notices them. Offensive? Not really. Annoying? Very.

I have no problem with posters LINKING to their gear. I don't have to click the link to look and see what memory cards or camera bag you use that way.

It is ironic that most posters list their gear before their website/flickr...

You don't have to click their links but you have to read their sigs?

If their gear is linked, all you see is

Gear

Otherwise, their gear list clutters up the page, especially while browsing on my blackberry, which I usually do. I know there is an option to not show sigs, but then I can't look at their website or their work, which I do enjoy doing.

Hang on, lemme see if I get this straight. You don't care what other people on this forum think but you make a point to access the forum on your Blackberry?

Let me clarify.

Specifically, what others on the forum think of my photos, to me doesn't matter, since the clients who pay me like them and are happy with them- and that's what important to me.

So I don't usually post my photos here.

I like reading what others think about general photography talk, their businesses, tips about marketing, etc.

Indeed. Hmm.

You don't post your photos here. Instead, you're here to read about, and I quote, "what others think about general photography talk, their businesses, tips about marketing, etc", none of which, incidentally, has anything to do with what's being discussed here. Yet here you are, watching this thread like a hawk given the speed of your responses, on your Blackberry after hours.

Hmm indeed.

I visit with my BlackBerry more and more these days because it's convenient. I wish there was a mobile version of the forum. No avatars, no signatures, no formatting. Just user IDs and their thoughts.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Just what are you implying?

I've already commented on people posting their gear in their sigs.

I commented on this thread, and I subscribe to threads i comment on.

Other people comment after me.

It continues to show up in my cp.

My BlackBerry dings at me every time someone posts to a subscribed thread. It's called push email. ;) :D
