OK, I just took this a few hours ago...

IMAGE: http://images36.fotki.com/v1201/photos/0/1185390/8348023/IMG_0137-vi.jpg

(The resize made it look kind of mottled -- see full-res below for detail)

Setup was:
- 40D with 70-200 F4L (at 70mm)
- AB B800 w/ softbox 45 degrees on left
- Speedlite 420EX with cheapie plastic diffuser 45 degrees on right.

I know there's a few things wrong with it off the bat (like the shadow on the side of my face from my wife), but what I really want to know is how best to process it. I used Digital Photo Pro (Canon's included RAW-processing app) and that's it.

The full-res version and the original RAW are at your disposal if you'd like to play around with it and share how I could make it better.

Thanks for the look!

The light is good - apart from the shadow in your face that you already commented on. The over all impression is that it is a bit reddish. But that can be easily fixed. either the colour temperature a bit down or the "red" just a tad less saturated. I am not much of a fan of DPP (the software you used) I prefer the raw processor in Photoshop CS4 or Lightroom - gives you more flexibility.

For me something is not perfect in the composition although I am not completely sure what.... May be just a little bit more of the boy - your wife's arm seems a bit cut off. Or the boy sort of sitting between the two of you on a support out of view. Wonder what others will have to say about that.

When I first looked I noticed it was a little red also. Not bad other than the obvious shadow on your face. Cute son btw.

+1 on the red but otherwise a nice shot.

Out of curiosity, did you change your setting to Portrait in DPP? I never use this for portraits because it always gives me this reddish tinge.

The red tinge is my fault. I thought the auto white balance made it a bit cool, so I warmed it up a bit, but looks like I may have overshot a little. Thanks!

I use DPP because it's free. :) Right now I can't swing the extra few hundred for LR or CS4. If you have any recommendations on another free (or sub-$100) app, I'd love to try it out.

As for the crop, ugh, that was kind of a pain. I was trying to balance A) The tight space I had to fit the camera and us, B) Trying to fill the background with the tree as much as possible (had to sit on the floor where the tree is widest), and C) Getting the DOF to where the tree was blurred sufficiently (and D - Trying to do it all while the baby was still happy :) )

Nope, but good eye. I've had the same experience as you mentioned with the Portrait setting, so I avoid it as well. This is just using the Standard setting.

I'm glad to hear it's not just me who finds 'Portrait' mode no use for portraits. :)

The photo appears to be about 1 stop underexposed and it doesn't have a color profile embedded so it appears overly red when viewed in most browsers. Ideally you want to embed the sRGB color profile when posting to the Web.

Also your setup description indicates you used cross lighting which isn't the optimal choice for most types of portraits. See this link for an explanation, especially the section titled "Try To Forget What You Saw in The Manual": http://super.nova.org/DPR/Canon/MultiCanon/ (external link)

If you turn on Image Editing you're likely to get lots of suggestions for post processing.

Adobe Photoshop Elements is generally under $100. I use version 7, but they have come out with 8. Very nice family by the way.
