This is where The addiction starts.

There's two routes that this will go...

1) 17-50 >> 10-22 or 11-16 >> 70-200
2) 50 1.4 >> 85 1.8 >> 30 1.4

and the routes continue to different bodies as the op finds it's genre and the lenses become more specialized. As the route goes on and on, you get more expensive, ultimately spending more.

Awesome, I got mine this week too. I don't think my kit lens will ever be mounted again.

Ha, I agree, and this is why I love the nifty so much. It gives you a taste of if you want to stick with primes or not. You can try it out for cheap, and end up giving canon all your money.

I thought the nifty-fifty was the 1.4 and the 1.8 was the thrifty-fifty?

Try not to drop it like I did, or else you'll be forced to drop $400 on an 85mm f/1.8.. ;)

But seriously, this lens started my journey into primes. Next on my list is the Siggy 30mm f/1.4 :D

Congrats!
Nifty fifty is such a fun lens to use. :)
Not only is it one of the cheapest lens, it is bright and very light, and darn sharp with couple of stops.
Have fun! :)

Thanks for all the great comments guys, took a pic of my mother in-law while the kids were playing in the pool. First portrait. Bit rushed.
More to come. Love this lens man.

1) she's in the shade, so her face is underexposed
2) she's not looking at you or past you, and she's squinting. Neither are particularly good things.

Thanks for the critique, as I said. I rushed.

ahhhh... i remember when i got this lens... it was actually my first lens on my 30d and i loved it.

its also a great feeling that the lens is so cheap. loved it when my $75 lens could keep me happy and content. its like a gateway drug... year and a half ago it was a $75 lens and now i need $1400-$1800 lenses to keep me happy.

im glad im not into wildlife photog and need super tele zooms... id be in trouble if i was

I hear you, for now I will refine my technique as I am self learning. But yes an 85 1.8 would be my next. I'm liking primes.

Still hours of reading on here, man this forums is a wealth of information.
