If lens are round, why do we take rectangle pictures?

I like this question. It makes me a lot to why things are certain way. I think Octagon is a very interesting way to maximize the amount of glasses usage. Regarding to aesthetic, all it take is digitally provide both octagon as well as retangular. We are now into the digital age that cropping doesn't require cutting or anything, afterall, all the information is ALREADY captured. It may cost a little more to the consumer to have use a little more wafer, but not by much.
