Hey everyone. I have a 17-85mm IS USM canon lens and I am looking at buying a new Camera. The one I am looking at is the new Canon 7d. I have heard that these professional bodies are not able to accommodate the lenses that have the white box on the mount for the image stabilization. Is this true? I haven't been able to find anything about it.

Thank you all in advance!
-Alex

The 7D can use both EF and EF-S mount lens, so your 17-85mm lens will work just fine with it.

7D | EF 24-105mm 4L | EF 28mm 1.8 | EF 50mm 1.4 | EF 85mm 1.8 | EF 100mm 2.8 Macro | EF 70-200mm 2.8L II | EF 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L

That comment is likely from when Canon's pro stuff was all APS-H or FF ;)

Yes the 17-85 will be fine on the 7D, but you might want to consider an upgrade because the 7D is going to show every flaw in that lens

Alex,
I have the 7D myself and use the 17-85mm IS USM Canon lens. I guess if you mean by "Professional body" a full-frame sensor it is not. The 7D has the aps-c cmos sensor. A full frame-sensor camera is something like the Canon 5d MarkII. If you google Canon 7D and look at the images you'll find one showing front of the camera with the dust cap and lens off with a red dot and white square indicating it will take L series lenses and the regular lenses. Here is a review site that will give you a ton of information about the 7D.

I agree, the 7D has a better sensor on it and will show flaws. The one thing I notice is the sharpness isn't as good unless your using an L series lens. You can definitely notice a difference.

Ja, Though i will also admit my 15-85 and my 100-400 look BETTER on my 7D than on my 30D, much sharper looking [Though I can also tell the difference between f/5.6 and f/8 on my 100-400 now..]

The white mount indicator has nothing to do with image stabilization. Take for example the ef-s 60mm macro, no IS.

7D will take any EF or EF-S lens. And it'll take image stabilization lenses too. Image stabilized lenses are still EF/EF-S. Nothing different.

The "white box" indicates that the body WILL accept EF-s lenses - none of the 1D/1Ds
series bodies or the 5D/5DmkII have this as they will not mount an EF-s lens (without modification to the lens).

That is inaccurate. The Red Dot indicates EF mount lenses, and the white indicates EF-S mounts. You have both L and non-L EF mount lenses available.

Yes, that is correct but I thought that was a given due to the name of this section hence Canon EF and EF-S Lenses. ;)
Thanks for clarifying that whoisvaibhav.

Well what I was trying to point out is that the Red/White dot is not related to L or non-L lenses.. :)

Thank you all for your advice! I am looking at upgrading to the 24-70 L 2.8 and most likely the 5dmk2. One of my friends is in the situation I described above so thanks again to all of your help!
