Great idea.

Now, if I can only figure out where I put my heatgun...

Glad you all like it and can benefit from it!!!:)

I used my gel holder at the beach this weekend, it was windy too. I just rubber banded the holder onto my 550ex and slipped a CTO gel in, and fired away. The gel never slipped out or had any issues.

Does anyone have a good idea of how to carry the gels? I am trying to find something the is compact and I can organize the gels by type. The only thing I have come up with is by using one of those picture holders that come in wallets. It works, but maybe there is a better DIY solution out there.

I bought a rolodex business card book and slipped the gels into the spots for the cards.

here is a link (external link) to the book similar to the one I bought.

This allows me to flip through the pages and find the gel I want.

great idea for the filter holder. Made one today and will try it out tonight.

Not sure if this has been posted or not, but for those that don't feel like DIY, there is this option:

That gel holder is out of business with the neat DIY in this thread. Done for pennies instead of $10.00 plus shipping. Plus without the garish "gel holder" words printed on it.

It is still an option for those who don't want to go the DIY route. For those that do I also have the instructions for doing it yourself on my blog, instructables, and DIYPhotography. Basically the same as your instructions.

For those that don't like the words printed on it, I'm happy to make a custom version with whatever words you would like. :)

Now I definitely need to get a kitchen blow-torch. I can make crème brûlée AND a filter holder? Life just got a little more civil.

Before anyone runs out to buy a heat gun (unless of course you've been wanting one and need an excuse) one of those long butane lighter guns works great. Just wave it back and forth accross the area you want to bend without stopping at any one place for about 10 - 15 seconds and it bends extremely easy.

I made 4 of these the other night. Two small ones fit nicely on my YN-460's and the larger ones fit some cheap Quantaray's I picked up recently. I actually bought a couple of the Gel Holders mentioned earlier before I saw this thread. I use those for my 580EXII's. Not that I'll ever be gellin' 6 lights at time; but this was a fun, cheap and quick little project so what the heck.

Thanks OP for the great idea.
