Well regardless of political affiliation, Obama in coming to my city on Sunday. I don't have any credentials to get into any press areas, which I doubt they will have anyways. He's helping someone in my state with a campaign. Anyways, I'm going to go out and try to get some shots of him. Do I need to worry about anything? I'm going to be swinging around my 300L. What I am saying, do you think I'll get sniped off for aiming my camera with that huge lens at our president? I hope not...

You should be fine, when you talk about it to people don't use the S word. A guy I knew had press credentials when Nixon came to town, he waved them at the SS checkpoint and said "I'm here to shoot Nixon", he spent the rest of the day in the back of a van in handcuffs.

Will the shooter become the shootie?
Ha-ha, you'll find out... be polite and they will let you know. You'll be ok as long as you follow their lead... best to be in plain sight and stand out, always.

You can probably get more keepers if you use one of these:

I have never PHOTOGRAPHED a current president, but the ex and hopefull candidate presidents I have PHOTOGRAPHED have had SS around them and I don't think I was ever given any special attention for having big lenses. I have always been just one of many and gone unnoticed by the guys that wear the little ear thingies and talk into their wrists (they really do).
My advice: be ready for being jostled, don't even try to use a tripod or monopod, and practice the technique of holding the camera up as high as you can and clicking away at subjects you can't see but can estimate the angle necessary to get the distance you want with AF OFF! otherwise you will get a b-load of shots of other peoples cameras and the back of the head of the guy standing two feet this side of Mr. O.

Thanks for the tips. Hope to not get too many backs of heads in my shots.

[QUOTE=scotteisenphotography;9405484]. Hope to not get too many backs of heads in my shots.

Crowds are problematic so try to have a plan. Know the area.
Being visible means your more likely to gain help from those in position to do so... be professional, and stay focused.
You have some long lens, try to get above the crowd. Anything you can stand on.
A stage level side shot is better than a up the nose mob level shot.

This has nothing to do with politics... capturing the image is all that matters, jeeeesze.

I'm glad a few people here are actually helping. I've worked as a photojournalist for a few years prior so I'm not too worried. He's actually speaking at Northeastern University. I still have my press ID but I'm not sure that'll get me in...oh well. Maybe he'll be walking outside too...

I would't worry about being mistaken for an assassin. An L lens is very distinguishable from a rifle. Make sure you can get some elevation, to get away from the crowd.

I shot the McCain/Palin rally when it was in Lebanon, OH. I walked through security and was asked what org I shot for and where my press credentials were. I didn't have any, obviously. Anyway, I was about 20 feet away from the candidates w/ 40D and 70-200 2.8 and never got a second look. The candidates, and certainly the Pres, and more importantly the SS are used to big white lenses. Did you see the inauguration?

Nice. Thanks. I did see the inauguration but I wasn't really watching for lenses (for once!)

If you're close enough...
Keep your eye on the subject; see if he's "giving" shots to the people nearby with cams. Some savvy people in the lime light deliberately will look into your lense and freeze their head monetarily for you to capture a clean image.
Way cool if you have this happen and capture it...

Thanks again for all the tips, but I actually got myself credentialed for the event, so I should be all set!
