I am going to be in Yellowstone the 28th of January through the 1st of February. First two days are going to be on a snowcoach traveling throughout old faithful and canyon and the next three days we are going to travel between mammoth and Cooke city through Lamar valley. Any tips on landscape shots or wildlife spots would be great!

Thanks,

Matt

The best wildlife will be found in Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley, but I don't know if you can drive to Hayden in winter. Lamar Valley is where the grizzlies and wolves are most likely to be. Small game and bison, elk can be seen almost anywhere. In summer, Mammoth has elk walking the streets.

You can go anywhere with a snow coach. I am going on one of Jess Lee's winter Yellowstone tours in mid February and he will be taking us through the Hayden Valley via snow coach.

I'm in Yellowstone again this weekend (here last weekend too). Not a lot of snow here -

Things were slow today - saw several Elk, Sheep, coyotes and Buffalo...

What part of the park are you in? Any luck seeing wolves? Let me know if you see anything tomorrow.

I worked as a ranger out of the NE entrance many years ago. As others stated Lamar valley is usually wildlife heaven in winter. The road is open to Cooke City. The Mountain scenery starts after you leave Lamar heading to The NE gate. Tower Falls is also a nice area to stop. To me the NE area is the most beautiful in the park. Enjoy, I am jealous......

May there be peace

Here is a Bighorn sheep I shot just outside of the East entrance a couple of weeks a go.

We were there a couple weekend's ago for some snowshoeing (didn't need them though since there isn't much snow) & saw a wolf along the Hellroaring trail. Poor thing was very mangey, moved slow & left drops of blood along it's tracks. We saw a good sized elk herd (cows) between Mammoth & Tower falls & some nice bulls closer to Mammoth itself.
I shot some interesting landscapes on our hike as the clouds come rolling over the mountains. YNP is unique that way with little storms passing through. You just have to wait & watch for the best shooting ops. Have fun!

Wolves are hard to come by these days... anyone can see them at a distance, but close is really difficult most of the time..

Shot this one today in the Lamar -
