I will get a Zeiss ZE 21 someday but I'm trying to keep debts down and so looking for something close to the optics of this for as little as possible. MF is expected and use Live View x 10 for focus, for tripod mounted environmental portrait sessions.

I love my 35L but it can be too long. Something in the 18-24 range is what I want. Min f stop not a biggie so long as f/2.8 or better.

Any ideas of what to look out for on eBay???

Thanks :)

Mike

PS. When I say cheap I don't mean really cheap, just sensible!

Canon 17-40 f4 L? I sold mine recently as I am moving to primes for the WA application.
With a full frame body this is pretty wide, no need for ultra wide lenses like Sigma 10-20 which would be comparable on a crop body.

Thanks Mike but I have the 16-35L and Sigma 12-24. I'm looking for a good, sharp, contrasty prime :)

There is no alternative for this lens. This lens is a FREAK. I have heard the new TSE lenses (both of them) are also excellent. The 17TSE cuts down a lot on fringing

if you want AF, you might consider the sigma 24 1.8 (or even the 20 1.8..though that's a bit more expensive). It doesn't have the zeiss optics (obviously) but it's a nice alternative.

Probably the only primes in the ballpark, from what I hear... none on Ebay, though.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Nooooooooooooooo, not the Sigma 20 f/1.8 :(

Not meaning to be rude :) Just that's one of the worst lenses I've ever used. :D

I reckon I will have to just face it, beans will be on the menu for a few months and I'll track down a Zeiss!

LOL! NP. :)
I don't have the 20 but I do have the 24. Sometimes I don't want to carry around the 14-24 (it's heavy) and the 24 sig works just fine in most instances. Though, it's definitely not in the same calibre as the zeiss.

There's a new Voigtlander 20mm Skopar f3.5 available in Canon mount which is supposed to be good:

This guy on flickr has lots of samples from a Nikon D700 with the lens (nikon mnt version obviously, but same lens)
