All lenses tested on 5D camera, pointed at a wall about 6 feet away.

All lenses were tested wide open (f/1.4 for 35L and 50 f/1.4, f/1.2 for 85L).

Center is the only thing guaranteed to be in focus; I suspect there was a mild slant to the camera axis relative to the wall, because all three original photos are slightly softer on the right than the left, and both sides are sharp at f/5.6 with all lenses.

I just received my 50 f/1.4 today and have been examining its IQ output when compared to my other most-used lenses, the 35L and 85L. The 50 f/1.4 does exhibit that same halation everyone knows about under some circumstances, but the detail is still there.

The 85L has a narrower DoF than the others, so the left and corner shots should be softer if they were not on the focus plane.

All in all, I think the 50 f/1.4 does a really good job with sharpness wide open. Bokeh is another story; there may be a bit of jitter, but I have not compared that characteristic to the 35L (or 85L, but I expect it to be ultra-smooth) so I can't say if it is any worse.

I think most 50 f/1.4s are pretty sharp in center. It's the halation thing that people see that makes them believe it's a soft lens model. In fact, I believe it is resolving the detail very well.

i like the 50 1.4 wide open better than the 35L i owned as well as the one i rented. the 50 1.4 is a whipping boy with obvious issues but for the price i think it's a steal.

The 35L is a great lens and is my main lens for 99% of my work. We will see if that continues to hold true come January 30th (next full wedding).

I'd be interested in seeing the upcoming Samyang 35mm f/1.2 compared to the 35L
