My full time job does not allow me to do a 365 project so instead I adopted a 52 weekly shot project I call 52 Variations as it is 52 different pictures of my 9 year-old son. This week's pic was his idea, me shooting a picture of him taking a picture of me. Below is the shot, I would love to hear what you guys think of it.

Thanks for looking. Please be gentle I'm prone to tears. :D

Fantastic shot! Did it take many shots to catch the flash, or was that by chance? Either way, it adds to the shot.

The lighting on him is great as well. Did you use a backdrop?

Thank you D'Juan. Setting up the shot was done with about 15 exposures. I'm sure I could have done it quicker with a light meter, but given I experiemented with 3 or so lighting positions and 3 or so angles from which to shoot, I didn't think it was too bad. In the end the shoot took about 30 minutes. My son is 9 and I need to get it done quickly before he gets too bored.

From the minute my son got this idea I saw the flash as necessary. I got the flash in shot by ordering a cable from Lon over at FlashZebra that allowed me to trigger the 40D with one of my CyberSyncs. The beauty of it was that the CyberSync transmitter on my 5DII triggered the 40D and the 580 EXII I had off camera right going through a shoot through umbrella at the same time.

Only thing I had to allow for was the lag in firing the 40D. As a result I had to slow my shutter a bit so I could catch the flash. If I didn't do that I would only get the 580 EXII in shot. In the end I only had to slow it to 1/60, not too bad. Thing I would definitely change is the DOF. Ended up F/11 was not deep enough. I would have liked the Canon and 40D stamping to be sharper.

Wow, thanks for the thorough explanation!

Take it for what you will, considering I'm a rookie, but I think the DOF (Depth of Field, correct?) is perfect. If it were any sharper, it would take away from the focus on your son. In my opinion, at least!
