I believe I've mentioned in the past that I have the opportunity to photograph birds (and wildlife in general) on the edge of a woodlot that boarders a field. This year the field was in corn and we always leave a little corn standing for the critters.

The Red Bellies capitalize on this opportunity (along with Blue Jays) and the first shot here is one of a Red Bellied that just returned from the field with a kernel of corn. I have witnessed them swallowing it whole.

The second shot is one of our regular Downys. We get a nice variety of woodpeckers around here, but the Pileated has remained very standoffish so far.

As usual, C&C appreciated.

PS; The Red Bellied was about 50 ft away. What do you think of the detail the 300L f/4 delivered.

Since I got the 300L f/4 the weather and light has been terrible so I haven't had any consistent opportunities to let it stretch its legs under workable conditions. Yesterday provided some decent light and I had fun using my new lens!:) Good to hear an endorsement from a fellow 300L f/4 user Gary.

Thank you Stan. I'm always interested to hear what others have to say. Keeps me from "drinking my own bathwater" if you know what I mean.

Duane, I really do appreciate the comments. You know I've been working to improve my shots and PP on black and white colored birds. Which for me are some of the most challenging. I figure if I can get it right on these, I'm good to go. As I've mentioned before, your comments and willingness to help has been very much appreciated.

It's amazing what a little good light in the field can do for a shot (and a new photographers self confidence! too :-))

Dave,
These are both very nice, You did very well in exposing these both and your skills in Photography and Post are growing quickly, Its a pleasure viewing your work.

Light does make all the difference, I think your allot like us here, sun is not a frequent guest especially this time of year, It adds the wow factor typically and something you just cannot create no matter what you do in Post.

Dan, thanks so much for your comments and encouragement. I'm happy you and others are seeing some progress in my skills. I've found that I enjoy bird photography much more than I would ever have expected. And I'm happy to share my enjoyment with others who appreciate and enjoy this hobby too.

I like your words... "sun is not a frequent guest"... Your right on with that!:) Hopefully this spell of blah days ends soon.

That Red-bellied is a stunner and a nice balancing trick with the corn..... I think this is the best all around Downy you have posted so far... as I have mentioned before, I enjoy seeing the natural detail of birds and these are exceptional... nice work Dave.
