Photography in New York

Im off to NY soon and was wondering about photography in the city. Would the cops have a problem with me walking around with my 5Dmk2 and 24-70 lens or even the white canon 70-200?

Nope. You will be OK.

Everyone has a DSLR these days. I'd think you would use your 24-70 more. I do. Last time I shot in the City, I had my 5D2 with 17-40 or 24-70 all day long. I don't even bother with the 70-200.

Coming from Australia, this concept is so foreign. You need to ask, in advance, on a photography forum whether the cops will be okay with you carrying camera gear around with you on the streets. I know this is said all the time, but I just can't believe what the world is coming to.

Are you saying the police in London will give you a hard time based on your camera choice?

That doesn't make sense.

No problems carry around the camera at all however I did kind of get yelled at for attempting to take a picture of a bank. They didn't like that much.

They're not that bad!! There are some restrictions on tripod usage around the capital and some areas are policed a bit more vigilantly but on the whole the police leave you alone. I have carried 2 bodies and large lenses around for years and never been bothered by police. It is not something that even crosses my mind when I go out to shoot.

Besides not allowing tripods in high-traffic areas like times square? nope.
You can carry around a super-tele if you want and maybe get some silly questions from bystanders.

If you are going to take photos of places where they don't want you to take photos of, such as government buildings, then they will bother you

Have seen a camera crew being talked to by the police, where the area was slightly....errrrr, think James Bond is all I can say

It's so obvious.

UK police just have a fancy for Nikon.

That's why our photogs get harassed.

I'll say this again. You won't have a problem.
Use common sense judgement as far as what and where you shoot.

If a Police Officer gives you a hard time don't resist and simply move on.

I routinely do street shooting in NYC and I have never been stopped. NYC is a big tourist destination as well, which means many, many cameras, including DSLR's everywhere.

Don't worry about it.

I dont see why they would there are so many people out there taking Pictures with SLR's. I'd be suprised if they caused any problems with you

Just don't stand in the center of the street. I was trying to get the shot, but the cop did not appreciate my enthusiasm.
