I bring my 40D on the hill all the time. I've been riding for about 12 years now and have a pretty good comfort level carrying a bag with my camera gear. I have had some terribly experiences though. Last winter I was on a trip to Kirkwood CA on a powder day and took my camera out to snap a few shots and a gust of wind blew a bunch of snow into my bag! it was pretty much filled. I didn't have much in it and nothing was damaged but i still had to ride down some pretty treacherous terrain with my 40D in hand cause i had no time to clean out my bag on the hill. Also, this past weekend, getting off the chair lift @ mount snow in Vermont a buddy of mine got his board stuck on mine and we both tumbled, me with camera in hand. I was able to save the camera and I took the brunt of the fall. Just remember to be cautions and always put the camera first in terms of awareness and you will be fine.

Here's a snaps from this weekend I took with my 40D

Good save. What about your experience with condensation?

If you're skiing or boarding and want to carry your gear without a bag check out this thread

Although I don't ski I do bike and can manage a gripped 50D with a 70-200 2.8 IS on my chest while I mtn bike.

Went snowboarding some months ago and it didn't end too well. My G9 was totally destroyed. I suspect that it was unintentional switched on before I took a fall thus crushing the lens barrel into the back. Repair guys did not consider saving it was worth the hassle.

Still I wore the camera under my water proof jacked from a neckstrap, something I had already done many times before while snowboarding or ice skating. Normally I have well developed falling skills so it has always been save. Next time I think a hard case around the camera would be an improvement.

Although it sucks I would do it again in a heartbeat as I wouldn't want to miss capturing the great time in the snow and the beautifull sights in the mountains. I'm just happy I left the big gear at home.

Hope my experiences will help you.
