A Barred Owl and a Saw-Whet owl from yesterday at Amherst island. Also saw a Boreal Owl, but it was sleeping in a tree and partially blocked by branches.

These are great.....the little saw whet owls must have that "evil eye" look perfected, seems like they use it all the time.

Great pictures, but I have to ask...

I see these great Owl photo series a lot on here. Do you just go out looking for them? What do you look for (yeah, I know - Owls). Are they owls in known positions? Is it a guided trip? Do you just sit and listen for them and sneak around the woods?

LOL, every time I go in the woods, I see Sparrows and Starlings.

Thanks everyone for your comments!

PhotoFrenz... Amherst island is on the north-west end of Lake Ontario and is famous for it's owls that spend the winter there due to the very high numbers of voles and unworked fields. Owl Woods is located on Amherst and is mostly a pine forest which makes for a perfect owl wintering location. Every winter birders and photographers from all over come to see the six different species which can be found there in the wild.

I also find Owls in lots of other spots and the key to finding them lots of times is to listen for the Crows. Crows harrass the Owls all day long till they move on to another location. I hope this helps.

Phil

Phil,

Nice shots, but the first shot is over the top, Love the birds side profile and light in the eyes, the perch contours to the bird nicely, very pleasing well captured.
