I really like these shots and I'm just starting to shoot with strobes so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but why did you choose f/8 and ISO 400 (as opposed to ISO 100 and f/4, for example)? Is there a benefit to stopping down with strobes? Just curious because I really like these shots. Great work.

I'm curious how the use of flash at that distance affects the ability to take shots like this? I wanted to give indoor basketball a try to help out some high school students with some yearbook photos and, at this point, I don't even know if I can use a flash anyway. I am very new to action photography since most of my experience comes from shooting evidence photos. Can you take a minute to explain some hints and tips for the very inexperienced and very impressed new guy?

TT.
Beautiful pictures. Love the red and white.
Great goalie shots, always a big fan.
Blackhawks have the best sweaters in hockey.

EXIF shows that you were getting 1/500s, f/8, ISO 400.. I'm assuming that's with the overhead lighting and some PW's. That's gotta be so much nicer than being stuck at f/2.8 and an ISO at 1600+

Cool shots.

That's why I was puzzled. It must be a pretty bright rink but I was still curious if the flash, which shows fired, was also a factor?

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments. Those were shot using the Pocket Wizard Flex TT5, Mini TT1 and 6- Speedotron strobe heads and powerpacks mounted in the rafters. If you look at the picture that I posted using the fisheye, through the hole in the glass you can see the strobes firing. Without going into a long explanation look at this link and you will see how those make you able to sync your camera with a higher shutter other than the standard sync speed....... :)
