Hello all,

I've booked a hotel room for 2 nights during the Oshkosh EAA AirVenture this July. I'd greatly appreciate any general information from those that have been in the past... What's the general flow of things? Any tips (besides the obvious of wear sunscreen, drink plenty of fluids, etc).

Thanks!

I attended my first this past summer (Gallery Here (external link)) and even being camped on the grounds for nine days, I felt like I barely scratched the surface.

With only two days, my advice would be to key in on one particular area (Warbirds, Antiques, Classics, Sea Plane Base, etc...) and milk it for all it's worth. Go early .. Stay late and work it, work it, work it...

Do a little walking around, take in some of the airshow in the afternoon but if there's one particular type of aircraft you really like, I'd expend most of my energy there.

If you're a fan of the DC-3/C-47, you're in luck as they're having a huge roundup of them in 2010.

Are you taking an UW?

Thanks, Jay. When do the grounds open to those not camping?

Windpig, a what? UW = ultra-wide? I'm afraid right now the widest I have is my 28-135 or my old 18-55 kit lens from my original Drebel... I know I'll probably need to rent something, but that'll depend on what's in my arsenal by then. I'm trying to sell off some stuff to make room (and raise funds) for some better quality glass.

Ya, ultrawide. They pack 'em in at Oshkosh, tight spaces. You're gonna have a great time.

You will have a blast. I went up in 2008 and stayed for a week. I didn't get to see everything I wanted to. SO much to see and do. If you want some extra shooting time check out the Canon team on site. They offer (or did at least) early morning guided photo tours. You and a few others go out with a Canon rep who offers tips for photographing airplanes. I missed it when I was there but heard it was well worth it from others who did participate. They also had a camera loan program with different bodies/lenses they would lend for a day at no charge.

HAVE FUN

I grabbed the base for this shot as I was walking to the exit from the show, which sadly required us to leave at 5PM.

I hope you enjoy my hometown this summer. Only two days means you'll definately have to pick 'n choose what you really want to see. IIRC static displays and ground-based activities are the norm for the mornings and the show takes to the air in early afternoon. I will say this: if you are going to drive anywhere around town, be prepared for detours and delays. We have lots of roads torn up this summer.

With only 2 days to spend there, I'm def. going to be first in, last out! I have a hotel room for Monday and Tuesday night, so my plan is to get there as early as possible Monday, all day Tuesday and all day Wednesday, leaving to come home when they kick us out - which I think you said is 5PM.

How did you book a hotel room the same year? I heard that you have to book at least 3 years in advance...
