We just got back from an incredible 8 day rafting trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. I'll post some of the many Landscape images that I took on the trip in the Landscape forum, but I do have a few wildlife shots that I've managed to process so far.

On our 2nd day out we ran across a couple of Big Horns. I had hoped we see some on the trip, but I guess that my planning left a bit to be desired. I had a real dillema of what lenses to take that would fit in my Pelican case. When it came to tele lenses, I opted for the 400 instead of the 70-200, reasoning that if I needed to shoot some wildlife, I would want the reach. I used used the 400 this one time, and we were sooooo close to these Big Horns that I would have been better served with the 70-200. Go figure! When we were right on top of them I stopped own the 400 to f/7.1 for more DOF because we were so close. I almost never stop that lens down. FWIW, the 4th Big Horn image was taken with my 50mm lens.

As for the Desert Spiny Lizard at the end, it would have been nice if I had been able to pack my Macro lens, but alas, I had to keep things minimal. My 15-30 zoom does allow me to focus close though so I was able to get the critter reasonably sized. He didn't seem too jittery fortunately and let me get fairly close. I'd love some suggestions on how to crop this image. What you see here is full frame.

Anyhow, here are the images. I hope you like them, and of course I'm always open to comments and especially suggestions. Please excuse the slow server

Wow, excellent series! They are awesome. I used to live in AZ and we would see these guys on the cliffs of Canyon Lake NE of Phoenix. Thanks for posting these, they are spectacular! (same as on FM!)

Very nice shots. Looks like great weather for a great trip.

I've photographed desert bighorns before, but I have gotten that close only once, so my hat is off to you.

For your next assignment, try to get a shot of rams and ewes together. And if there are kids, it is extra credit.

Ed ~
Great shots! I did the 8 day Grand Canyon trip last summer, but none of my pictures came out nearly as nice as yours (of course, I had a small digital for my trip). Can't wait to see more pics from your trip!

Great shots as usual Ed. Your bird shots are the reason I bought the 400mm f/5.6L, the best lens purchase I have ever made. I agree about the stopping down, I don't think I've ever taken a shot that wasn't at f/5.6!
