The basic Canon EF walkabout found its first duck (the Chinese Muscovy) today...I got it a couple of days ago off Craigslist and I'm very pleased with it...

not bad... not sure if that is noise or your shutter speed is a little short. What were you shooting at?

I too have this lens, don't really use it that much.

Good capture. I love the face on this creature. The bokeh seems to be acceptable. But like regnis said there is some noise, you can see it clearly on the bottom left.

Look at the face again, how cool is that? Beautiful bird. Good work kitacanon!

yeah its a beautiful bird alright but its a shame that this guy would probably end up on the table of some Chinese family as bbq duck :( which I had last week  but it was soo good though :D

edit: about the noise. Did you boost the brightness in post processing?

ISO 400/320@F7.1 (the widest F-stop I found for acceptable sharpness)....
Here's the full frame....as for noise, the above shot is a 90% crop so I guess I'm lucky that it isn't all that noticeable on my monitor (22" CRT) or print...at least to my eye...When I look at it on my HDTV (42" on a 4:3 aspect ratio) it's kinda like soft grain from the good ol' days...

As for post processing...in DPP sliders were set to daylight, landscape, null for all other settings (5 on sharpness)...nothing done in PS but the cropping...perhaps the landscape setting exaggerated the light, but it was late in the PM and the color of the light was just about how you see it.

how's it compare to the 24-85 you use to have?

The 28-105 is smaller/lighter....
IQ is similar, sharpness is similar...but, and this is important, it has less barrel/pincushion distortion which makes for better group shots (little distortion at the ends)...

I had in fact been looking for another 24-85 for shooting candids of kids at events...(the 18-55 I'd got in it's place is not long enough, and with the darker EFS screen on the 40D that lens's through view is noticably darker...). I'd shoot at 28mm on the 24-85 (and with a flash) to reduce the edge distortion and increase edge IQ by using F5.6 and smaller...but...

I can use the 28-105 @ 28mm with better results so I'm not losing anything at the wide end, and have the advantage of better IQ at the longer end...that is, this lens at 85 is better than the 24-85 at 85mm...
The wider F3.5 is comfortably brighter (indoors) than the 18-55 on the 40D...

So, lots of advantages, little if any downside (unless you absolutely need the 4mm wider end...but the 18-55IS kit gives me that and another 6mm as well...if I need them...

Finally, at $100-125, this lens seems to sell for 1/3 less than the 24-85...and even less if you're not in a hurry and just let it fall to you...mine came with a good deal of internal dust (at least compared to the rest of my lenses), and a 1/4" scratch on the front element caused by a broken filter whose now empty ring won't come off the lens...and so, I got it for $55 off Craigslist...
