Am I right right in thinking there's no replaceable date/time button battery in the G10? I've checked all the obvious places, but can't see one. Foreby, the manual would seem to suggest there's an internal lithium that takes its charge from the main battery. Is this right?

My understanding is that the date/time is stored in the camera's internal memory, which doesn't need a battery to store its data.

Yeah it has some sort of internal battery like PC's do. I have no idea what kind but it will remember the date and time if you take the battery out.

G7 similar Re: G10 back-up battery

I presume G10 could be similar to G7, albeit a quite 'evolved' member of the G-neology. :D

Check here for the button battery. Overall an interesting 'tour' of the camera.

Ah, yes - I googled and got the self-same. So, unless I'm methodically brave and get to page three, it's a full-scale Canon 'repair' should the internal lithium fail prematurely?

Hi again.

I just read page 15 of my G10 manual, which clearly states that the date/time "button" battery needs to stay in contact with a power source (AC/DC adapter or main battery) to retain its charge. Otherwise, it'll go dead after three weeks.

So I stand corrected.

John

Hi John - Yup, that's how I read it. But I'm still curious about the rationale that buries the button battery away like that - unless Canon are confident that it will last the MTBF rating of the camera. And why other models are provided with an easily replaceable battery.

Agreed. That's extremely short-sighted of them. >:-(

I am pretty sure they and other mfrs can do it because of newer battery technology... that is rechargeable, and resilient (probably can go to 'dead' and still come back to take a charge... though best not to push it there). This is unlike most common computer motherboard batteries that might need replacing at 5 years and were not rechargeable. (more recently, some laptop CMOS batteries do gain a recharge from main battery too).

I hope you're correct, Carlo. Considering the speedy rate at which digicams depreciate these days, if the G10's date/time battery needs to be replaced by a Canon service center after only 5 years, the battery plus the service charge would most likely cost more than the camera's value. :-(
