The BBC is currently running a series about digital photgraphy. The premise is they get 3 professionals and give on a phone-cam, one a cheapish point and shoot and one a top notch DSLR. They are then tasked to go out and get some good shots of their local area. For example:

It has been quite interesting, but it is just me or are dozens of better photos than this posted on this site every day?

This was taken by a woman who is a professional landscape photographer and had the top nothc DSLR. Am I missing something??

That's true. Many of the competition images are much better than the professionals.

I saw this episode on TV ( A Digital Picture of Britain, BBC4) and I thought her pics were pretty average - in her defence she was a first time digital user but then she had a pro DSLR and other pros got better pics with a phone camera and a p&s.

that photo looks remarkably amateur to me, maybe if it was converted to B&W it might look better.

Thing that get's me is that the one's people enter on the site then get on to BBCI by the amount of votes they get. But For the urban shots for the north, there's a 100 pages alone, that's just for urban. 90% of them must be being misssed

I don't know what good composition is.... Sometimes for me composition has to do with a certain brightness or a certain coming to restness and other times it has to do with funny mistakes. There's a kind of rightness and wrongness and sometimes I like rightness and sometimes I like wrongness. Diane Arbus

watching the tv show right now on bbc 2 - "A Digital Picture of Britain". the shots on the website may not be so great but the interesting thing is watching how the pros work - what thoughts are going through their minds when composing, what's the story they're trying to tell. interesting to watch how they work.

I watched a few of these programs and thought exactly the same. However, after some reflection I reckon that the pictures were not designed to be art - like what we do - but as reportage. There were words, a story, which, for the most part, accompanied the pictures.

If you look at many pictures in newspapers and magazines, the technical quality is not always great (especially if the photographer has been lying in a bush trying to catch Britney without her top on) but is illustrating a story.

The funniest image was watching Joe Cornish (large format landscape man) trying to mount his mobile phone on one of his tripods while standing on top of a van.
