Need some advice since 'm just starting out and mainly do sports.

A guy I play hockey with, his company needs some exterior shots of buildings they are working on and an interior shot of a data center they built. They want the interior shot now and exteriors in the spring. They want all rights to the photos. They used to fly in a photographer but want to go with someone local to save costs.
The company will be paying me, not the individual.
However, this same individual has booked me as an exclusive photographer for a decent sized event over the summer, that he runs, and another in the spring, where I can sell prints, which I'm going to make a killing off. I also get the feeling this guy is going to give me a ton of business in the future. And I'll be seeing him once a week for hockey games.

So what's a going rate for architectural photography? I haven't a clue. Do I charge by day? By image? My main concern here is getting a good price for myself without pissing off this guy as I think I'll get alot of business from him.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Ya I know I spelled architectural wrong in the title :)

Hi Tim,

I'll state the obvious - where are you based? Pricing tends to differ greatly by area.

I've looked at your website and even that does not make it clear where in the world you are.

If you ask people here about "All Rights" pricing then in my experience you are unlikely to get figures of below $2000 per image suggested and maybe lots higher.

If you can give a bit more information about the job - is it local to you or will you have to travel, how many images do you need to deliver, how long will it take, do they really want to use the images for print publishing in China and India (because that is effectively what "All Rights" means), how much time will be spent in post production, will you have to rent specialist equipment - tilt/shift lenses or additional lighting for example, will models be needed to populate the images, will the interior and exterior shots need special staging and accessories that you will have to provide, will you be taking an assistant(s) etc... you may get some feedback.

The above are some things to think about but only really scratch the surface.

Local to me.Travel about 20min for me, no big deal.

I live outside DC. The images are for their website and prints for their office. They will be "as is" photos with no additional lighting or accessories, so I wont have to rent any equipment or bring in an assistant. A total of 5 shots, pretty simple gig.
Just don't know where to start.

Thanks for the reply.

So I guess that if I take your statements as fact you are looking at a couple of hours work then.

You can either charge per photo per usage - start by having a look at the likes of Alamy and Getty charge for the usages that your client wants and this gives you one starting point. Alternatively you can simply charge an hourly rate that you are happy with.

As they have previously flown someone in I am guessing that they have paid good money in the past but have received top quality work in return. I haven't really looked at your work but you should be happy that you can deliver a quality comparable to what they have previously had.

I read somewhere on here that one Architectural photographer spent over 8 hours just setting up the lighting for ONE interior shot and he was charging in excess of $10,000.

The bottom line is that you will have to price in line with their expectations. If they are happy with some quick snapshots you are unlikely to get big money from them - if their expectations are higher then the price you can charge is commensurately higher so long as you can deliver the end results.

Theres a really good architectural guy that posts here. I think his name is Park Street and his from Texas. Maybe PM him? I wouldn't know how to price architectural photography. Most of the big dogs use cameras that you can really control perspective with. And it can take hours to correctly light an interior.
