First tournament for the new year and was great to head out to this. Managed to shoot alongside another POTN'er so that was awesome. Some of the highlights from the weekend.

Thanks.

When I first started to shoot Rollerderby, one of the hardest sports to shoot since its difficult to predict what will happen.

It lives up to its challenge and even if you are not shooting, great fun to watch. Hopefully we see it growing in popularity in the UK this year. :)

Some great shots Teshi.

I'm used to seeing Roller Derby on a pitched track. I know they don't have those everywhere but are all the matches you see on that flat oval?

Thanks. When I met other top end American photographers at a big tournament in early 2009, I started looking and a lot of their work was banked track work, same as that movie, Whip It.

Seems that the UK have adopted and taken part with the womens flat track derby association so every game I have seen is played on a gym or stadium based floor with tape markers.

Hopefully when I do travel to the States, I get to either photograph or just watch a banked track game. Can see it having slightly different tactics.

Depending on the players location, usually between 1/100-1/400 for shutter speeds.

ISO1600-3200. I rarely go lower.

If using the 85mm, im at f1.8 and if using a 135L, im at f2 unless I try some slow shutters, then about f8 or smaller.

Im not a fan of that. Tried on my knees and sitting down and a pain to keep up with them in the corners.

Plus my back doesn't like it much. I prefer a standing position, plus its different. :)

I do agree with adam on getting a bit lower...

Kinda off topic but what is the point of Roller Derby? Scoring system?

Standing position is different? Different from what? Because its certainly not different with regards to the exact same view that almost all human beings experience every single day...

You can do what you want but if youre looking for dramatic pictures, it is by getting pictures from angles and positions that you dont normally see in daily life...

I dont know all the details but theres one person (they normally have stars on their helmet) whos goal is to continually lap people. The opposing team tries to stop the starred person while the starred person's teammates attempt to block for them.

Make sense?
