I sold my 10D and replaced it with a 30D, okay the 30D is faster, and has a larger LCD screen, but overall I wish I still had my 10D. Always had good IQ.
For $200.00 I would snap it up, you won't be disappointed.

I just got my 10D out this evening. Haven't used it much since getting the 7D but still turns out quality photos!

First thing I noticed was how small the screen is. My word, it's tiny!!! Never bothered me before but after viewing the 7D and 5D, it's pretty much usless! (I still love my 10D!!!)

Mine is pretty much relagated to snapshots around the house now but not long ago I was shooting weddings with it and it does a great job. Still a great camera and a workhorse but it is yesterdays technology for sure.

New subjects for my 10D ...

Born on New Years Day. Eyes just opening, first steps being taken and a very vocal group of 8

And I suggest you go for the 10D if you want a backup but just remember, it is an older camera.

10d was a great camera. It will not go to 3200 ISO, if I recall. ISO 1600 is pretty much unusable. ISO 800 is very grainy. ISO 100 is beautiful. Slow startup, slow autofocus. A great camera, but I wouldn't buy one now.

Couple of sample pics taken with my 10D.

Pretty tough to be this kind of image quality and capability for $200...

and a couple more with my "old" 10D. :) I am actually selling mine for $225 with grip, battery, and charger.

Not sure that I would call it "slow"... It's a lot faster than what I had shot with prior to purchasing it new!

It will do ISO 3200, but it looks terrible. I've found ISO performance to be about 1 stop noisier than my 30D. At low ISOs the output is very clean though.

20D is what 10D should have been!

10d is a beast. Its slow, really slow, which will cause some shots to be missed. Has good IQ though.

How quickly we become jaded.

When the 10D was first introduced, it was a breakthrough for the prosumer DSLR market. It improved upon the features of its predecessors (D30, D60) while bringing the price down to a reasonable and affordable level.

Yes, by today's standards it is slow to start up, doesn't have the burst speed of even the entry model Xxx models, has a tiny LCD and is "only" a 6 megapixel sensor. Yes, ISO3200 is pretty noisy, but I've shot with it and the images cleaned up very nicely with Noise Ninja.

But.....it can still produce some very beautiful images. It is definitely not an outdated camera by any means.

That having been said, the OP may well be advised to look at one of the newer models such as a 20D or 30D, especially if he already has an investment in EF-S lenses, which will not work on the 10D. But, if its just in terms of image quality and good bang for the buck, don't be so quick to throw the 10D under the bus.

I have a special place in my heart for the 10D. It was my first DSLR, after resisting the switch from film for many years. I've since moved up to my current lineup of a 1D MkIII and MkIIN with an XTi as a walk-around body, but I still have my 10D body. I carry it along occasionally as an emergency backup "just in case", and I wouldn't hesitate to use if if necessary. Yep, there is a noticable shutter lag as compared to the 1D bodies, but it's hardly unworkable.

Sorry for being long-winded, it just sorta upsets me to see the 10D being bad-mouthed.

If you really do not need a second body then the 10D would be pointless buy even if it is available at throwaway price, im sure in terms of performance the XSI will be much better.

I am in the same boat.
My main body is a 7D with a 40D back up. This along with a 5 lenses is my main kit and all that goes everywhere with me.
I was thinking on a 10D body and a lens in a small bag to take with me when I do not want to take everything.
I shot one today and the screen was tiny (used to my 40D) but it seemed to do nicely.
They are asking $190 for it. I have an EF 28-135 lens (7D kit) that just sits in my gunsafe. I am thinking 10D and 28-135 lens to take with me when I am sure I won't need a camera or hate to carry everything with me.

That's what keeps me from selling my XTi + 18-55 IS + 55-250 IS kit. Of course, the XTi is a bit newer than the 10D. There are times when small and light makes sense.

Agreed.
Now that I feel I have gotten somewhat competent with photography I have learned you do not have to have the very best gear to get good images (though I agree it does make it much easier to get even better images) as long as you can use your equipment to it's potential.

From what I have seen the 10D can still produce excellent results.

The 10D is still a very capable body, used within it's limitations. By today's standards, yes, it's slow. So I never used my 10D when I required today's standards shooting. The lcd is small and very laggy when reviewing. Then again, I'm not much of a chimper and only used the lcd for histogram info. As mentioned, EF lenses only for the 10D. Never an issue for me, but may be a factor for you.

I have used an XSI, and in my own personal preference I would use the 10D over the XSI. The 10D's body is so much more robust than the XSI, and far easier to make manual changes too. I also really like the 10D's IQ, too.

iso 3200 is a bit noisy, but as long as the exposure is correct the image can clean up nicely with good NR software. I rarely used the 10D beyond iso 800. Then again, I rarely use my 40D beyond iso 800.

There is one thing that that I believe (and others as well) the 10D still outperforms other more current DSLRs in; and that's how the 10D renders red.

Most likely a 20D or 30D may suit you better overall, but the 10D is still quite capable...if you're patient enough.

It all depends on the price. I probably wouldn't spend more than $125 on a 10D nowadays, $150-175 with grip.

20D and up is a better camera, but there is no canon DSLR out there that has better colour than the 10D in my opinion.

The 10D won't take EF-S lenses, so you may want to find a used 20D instead. Given what you have, it seems like your money might be better spent elsewhere unless "couple hundred bucks" means $200 or less. For example, do you have an external flash?

actually it does work with ef-s lenses, you just have to remove the rear baffle and replace it with a ef baffle if you wish but it is not needed.
