Personally, I would sell the 10D and go with a 30D. It is just more capable. Everything it does, it does better than the 10D except maybe give more muted reds. I find all of the colors of my 10D to be more muted than either my old 30D or my 50D.

My concern would be that I would miss a shot waiting for the 10D to process information. I know mine will sometimes pause on me while it is writing to the card. The 30D will not do that.

If I were faced with a once in a lifetime trip like this, I would probably sell my 10D and pick up something faster. If not faced with a trip like this I would probably keep the 10D. I have a 10D now as a cheap throw in the car camera. If something happens to it then so be it. Only cost me about $130 anyway.

If I were you I'd look here on this site or local craigslist for a good priced, lightly used, 20D or 30D and not even bother selling the 10D...as a "throw in the car" camera my 10D is worth much more than the $150 or $175 I might get for it.

I've seen 20Ds listed on Craigslist for as little as $250-$275.

I like the 10D. Keep it in the car in an old padded cooler bag I found in my garage. Who would lift a cooler bag? I keep an $80 Tamron 28-200 lens on it. Gives really nice images when stopped down. Have a $70 fleabay YN-465 flash I stick on it.

Don't know how many times I have been out and about and wished I had my camera. This works great.

The wife and I are wanting to annonymously help out a 15 year old kid here locally. He shows a lot of interest in photography and runs around with a really junky P/S. We don't want to soak a fortune into it because he might change his priorities in a month. So 20D and 18-55IS lens, cheap flash. Sounds about right.

Check out Indy's Craigslist...I do all the time and there was a 20D on there for, I think, $275 just this week....

Thanks again guys. Like I said before, I don't think the 10D is really worth selling, but as mentioned, is worth keeping it around. My thoughts right now are to buy a 20/30/40D and take that to Africa as my backup, and pass the 10D on to my 16 year old daughter. Now I just have to find a reasonable general purpose lens for her to carry on the 10D. Kills me because a sold a really nice Canon 28-105 last year cause I have the range covered with good L glass.

Anyway, so I think that's where I'm at. Better back up for the Africa trip, even if I buy and sell again after the trip. Will keep the 10D for my daughter, and find a lens that will suit that same purpose.

Again, thanks for all the feedback.bw!

The 10D isn't worth selling at the price its selling for, keep it as a backup for you or your daughter at home. Get a 20D or 30D as its 5fps burst rate and more robust body will balance better with the 70-200 f/4L than a Rebel would. Plus if you need to futz with the Rebel vs. the 20D/30D you will need to get used to it... thats a task that coming from an EOS interface is NOT such a simple task. Every time I try to try a Rebel at the store with the intention of getting a smaller body for those times I can't get away with a big one (more and more sporting events, local events, etc...) no matter how much I try, I can't get used to the Rebel interface... its so darn un-intuitive. (For this reason I hope there some chance, some little shred of a chance that the recent rumors of the 60D being a smaller body with the EOS interface come true).

The 30D is a fine camera with a GREAT IQ. Or you could always rent.

Can't go too wrong with another 28-105. Should be easy to find one. Ebay lists 6 or 8 a week.

As I have shopped on here there have been several 30D bodies for sell. Might be worth checking in to reflections. Occasionally I have seen a 40D but I am never fast enough to buy it.

Yep, that's the plan, but won't be racing you d. I'll chill for a while, and buy something closer in to my trip in May. Likley buy for the trip, then sell when I return or as some have suggested on another thread, sell before coming home....

Thanks Again

Whatever you decide Tim, I hope you guys have a great trip. I have about talked myself into keeping my 30D as a backup. It's been a great camera. PM me when you get back from your trip and post some pics in the photo sharing section!

Thanks Clay. I haven't given up the idea yet of taking your 30D to Africa........

I'd love it if you did! I'll hang on to it. If you want it that would be great to know it has been on such an adventure.

Different batteries...

I have found that using cameras which need different batteries could propose a logistical problem. The problem should not be great if you keep your head screwed on right but, I can't chew gum and walk at the same time.

I ended up at the bottom of Carlsbad Caverns with a dead 10D battery and my other two 10D batteries in my motorhome back at the town of Carlsbad. The only charged batteries were for my 350D and the only remote release I had was for the 10D. So I ended up having to use my 350D by tripping the self timer. That delayed my photography considerably.

It was my own fault but, there is always the chance of something like this happening.

I really like using the xxD cameras (even the 10D) better than using the xxxD cameras. The imagery is not significantly different but, controls and ergonomics are better on the xxD style bodies.

If you want to upgrade the 10D, I would choose a 20D or 30D instead of any xxxD.

A 30d would be kinda nice with the larger screen, instant gratification if it's a good shot (won't get into the whole issue of chimping though... lol)
