It's a completely ridiculous policy. I seriously doubt that a potential terrorist is going to sit there in plain view taking 100 shots of a train from the same angle; I would suspect he only needs one or two. Utter stupidity and lack of critical thought on display by officials here. Is there no common sense in government anymore?!?

Terrorists really don't even need to leave their compounds. They can scout a target via Google Earth.

If a terrorist really is scouting via photography, chances are they're interested in the security systems and not the trains themselves.

its all about the illusion of security for the peasants ( i mean American citizens)

I travel quite a bit - but today was a new one for me - had my cream cheese confiscated at security, they let me keep my bagels, but took my SEALED tub of cream cheese...

hahahaha - what a joke! THat freakin guy on Christmas day snuck fireworks through, and they are concerned with cream cheese (oh and Peanutbutter FWIW)

It certainly becomes and explosive misture after I have had some - takes a few hours to develop fully though!

OK, I look forward towards my encounter with our local police force (Met Police(UK)), I seem to love my photography too much, and on my business card, I have "Shootist extreme" which should raise some eyebrows

Where the hell is Jack Bauer when you need him?

He's breaking other Constitutional Rights.

I'm still waiting for Big Brother to nail someone who has the money to take these paranoia issues to the US Supreme Court.

The fact of the matter is if you are on their property, they can regulate if you can photograph anything. Since that's where many of the best shoots can be had... it's a lick on you.
That said, sugar catches more flies than vinegar...

Define "their" property. I'm not familiar with this system, but is it privately owned and contracted back to the city? If it is CITY owned land/ equipment, they may not have a leg to stand on so far as that account

Which means it's public property. City owned = tax payer owned.

So are military bases and government buildings, but that doesn't mean you necessarily have the right to visit them, let alone photograph them.

Some of the nuke R&D sites one can be shot on sight... and not with a camera.:p

Life ain't fair...

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealing's done

You really don't know about the cold war do you?
There are still facilities in the US where you can be shot on sight, no warning, no nothing.
