Congrats on the decision to move. I too would personally recommend the 17-55 over the 24-70L. Don't be blinded by the red ring. The 17-55 is killer. Aside from build quality, it is definitely a better optical performer than the Nikon 17-55, and also cheaper. And it has a stabilizer to boot!

it also makes a killer omellete!

canon 1dmk2* Canon XSi * Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG * Canon 17-40mm f/4L * Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX * Canon 50mm f/1.8 *

I second that. Got the 17-55 IS for testing and fell in love with it. This thing is SHARP. Not sharp. SHARP.
It's fast.. it's SHARP.. it has IS.. and some say there's an L element in it, so it just won't get an red ring because of the construction and because it's APS-C lens only. Not sure about the last one tough...
Anyway... its worth a trial. I'm sure you'll love it! ;)

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D
