Hello,
I do lot of Lure Coursing photography ( outside )
Tomorrow I will be doing Dog Show indoors and would love to get some tips on sstting of my camers with out the flash ?
I use 40D & new 7D with canon 70-200 2.8 and 28-70 2.8

The dogs are standing than they do slow pace running around the ring.

Last week I was shutting at 1/200sec and 800 ISO mostly all the way to 2:8 images were okay but was locking some sharoness!
Oustside at speed I normally pan and free hold camere and there is no problem .
Indoors should I pann as well since I am taking several frames per dog ruuning , or would be better to point and shot.

Please help, I amd new in thsi and any good tips will help me thsi weeknd.

Best Regards,
Les

Based on your settings from last week, I would suggest the 7D at f/2.8 ISO 1600 1/400 or ISO 3200 1/800 with whichever lens works best for where you are positioned.

I have some dog show shots in my flickr (link is in the signature below) starting on page 3. They are outdoor in the sun so the exposure settings won't help you but you might find the technique I used helpful. They had the dogs in square "rings" and I was in position at one of the corners. This way I could get shots from the side as the came out then from the front as they trotted along the "front" of the ring towards me before circling back to the judge.

I would shoot the side shots horizontally and the head-on shots vertically and since the 7D lets you use different AF points for horizontal vs vertical I could select the point for each orientation that was over the dogs face. So for each dog I would hold the camera horizontally and take a couple shots panning as they ran then when they turned the corner I would just rotate the camera to vertical and the camera changes the focus point and I could take a couple shots as they came towards me. Very easy, focus point always right on the dogs face and no fumbling with changing the AF point as they circled around.

I used the 24-105 for most of the shots and used the 200mm for the closeups.

Not sure where you are based but in the UK flash photography isn't allowed whilst the dogs are being shown and you also have to ask permission from the show and owners to take them. Don't know why but not all owners like their dogs being photographed by people, doesn't bother me. If you look at the show schedule/catalogue for that show it will advise you on their rules.

Like Big K said, crank up the ISO so you can get a workable shutter speed for freezing the action. From what I have seen and read, the 40D and especially the 7D handle high-ISO noise rather well.
