All of those images came from a zoom lens set at 300mm. When you need a closely framed image and have to capture action at a distance, a telephoto lens is a must - and has been for decades. Nowdays, this kids of equipment is so affordable that it's typical for an "average Joe" to use it at most sporting events you'll find.

i think these consumer level super teles are too slow for sports anyways... f5.6 or something on the long end?
All of the above images are at f/5.6. Two are from indoor events with the camera set at high ISO.
