All of those images came from a zoom lens set at 300mm. When you need a closely framed image and have to capture action at a distance, a telephoto lens is a must - and has been for decades. Nowdays, this kids of equipment is so affordable that it's typical for an "average Joe" to use it at most sporting events you'll find. banpreso wrote in post #9442158 i think these consumer level super teles are too slow for sports anyways... f5.6 or something on the long end? All of the above images are at f/5.6. Two are from indoor events with the camera set at high ISO.

Have you actually used a telephoto lens? 200mm is a very nice focal length for portraits at about 10-15 feet. For example these shots from the archive thread on the 200mmL. -- Ken
