many consumer level zooms reaches out beyound 200mm, and people pair it up with a crop senor 99 out of 100. so that's 320mm on the conservative end (200mm) or 480mm on the aggresive end (300mm). what does an average joe photo hobbiest shoot at that kind of distance??? portrait at 1/4 mile away?

I *wish* I could shoot 1/4 mile away with a 200mm! I shoot indoor dog events with 200mm, the dogs are probably 20-30 feet away.

Just a few examples of non-pro shooting...
School sports with their child, like field sports or individual sports. (Pro events generally restrict lenses that are too long from being brought into their stadiums.)
Graduation ceremonies.
Closeups taken from long distances, of the kids at play.
Closeups of animals or birds.
The lady changing clothes with the curtains open in the highrise across the street.
Photos of the husband going to or leaving his mistress' apartment, in preparation for the meeting with a divorce lawyer.

Canon dSLR system, Olympus OM 35mm system, Bronica ETRSi 645 system, Horseman LS 4x5 system, Metz flashes, Dynalite studio lighting, and too many accessories to mention

I had a customer that wanted a Sigma 150-500mm because he was in that line of work. It was an ... interesting ... conversation. ;)

All of those images came from a zoom lens set at 300mm. When you need a closely framed image and have to capture action at a distance, a telephoto lens is a must - and has been for decades. Nowdays, this kids of equipment is so affordable that it's typical for an "average Joe" to use it at most sporting events you'll find.

All of the above images are at f/5.6. Two are from indoor events with the camera set at high ISO.

Birds, motorsports, portraits, even landscape. My 100-400 @ f5.6 is just fine for outdoor use.

1/4 mile away? Have you actually used a telephoto lens? 200mm is a very nice focal length for portraits at about 10-15 feet. For example these shots from the archive thread on the 200mmL.

no i've never used anything longer than 100mm with my corpper. i'm mainly asking because the 300mm, 480mm equivlant seems a bit extreme. 200mm seems pretty handy shooting from the back of a church.

For the newbies, the parts I put into bold type above are not true as written.

What the author is trying to say is that a 200mm lens used on an APS-C format camera (a so-called "1.6 crop" camera) provides the same field (angle) of view as a 320mm lens on a 35mm film camera (or a so-called "full-frame" DSLR).

Also, a 300mm lens used on an APS-C format camera (a so-called "1.6 crop" camera) provides the same field (angle) of view as a 480mm lens on a 35mm film camera (or a so-called "full-frame" DSLR).

The fact is that the focal length of a lens NEVER CHANGES when you fasten it to different format cameras.

The term "format" refers to the size of the film frame or digital sensor in a camera.
